"Under Orders," Francis’s first novel in six years, puts to rest the suspicion that the once prolific 86-year-old author might have lost his spark. Old fans will be delighted to discover the 4th appearance of former championship jockey Sid Halley, and newcomers will be more than pleased to make his acquaintance.
First appearing in "Odds Against" in 1991, Halley was at the very top of his game when a fall from a horse began a series of personal tragedies that cost him his career, his left hand, and his marriage. Bitter but unable to stay away from the track he loved so much, he discovered he had a natural aptitude for sleuthing and could get some much needed satisfaction by investigating improprieties within horseracing circles. Now 38, Halley has a thriving business and a healthy romantic relationship. He’s mellowed plenty, but he’s still dogged, intrepid, and quick on the uptake when it comes to finding those who prey upon his former colleagues or their horses. Martin Jarvis’s performance is letter perfect: he changes voices, remains in character, and gallops this winner straight across the finish line.
