Under the Influence by James Robert Milam (1993, Paperback, Reissue)

I purchased this book when it first came out and gave it to my ex-husband to read, hoping it would help. He has been on and off the wagon since. Now I have a girlfriend who just lived through ICU withdrawals and felt the need to revisit this information. This book will help you understand why and what is going on in not just the body of the alcoholic but the mental aspects as well. Very few people make it through life without knowing an alcoholic. This is by far the best book on this subject even with the copyright being older. The material is still very relevant. I bought a second copy to send to the family members who are taking on her on-going care. Highly recommend for anyone feeling baffled by this crazy-making disease.

So far I love the book, It hasn't taken a religious stand unlike AA books and its very informative. I Bought the book to get a better understanding of the disease and It did just that. I recommend it for anyone who has a loved one struggling with alcohol, a recovering addict and people just wanting to learn about Alcoholism.

This book is the most comprehensive book on alcoholism and it's effects I have ever read. It covers every stage of alcoholism from mental, emotional, to physical. I learned more about alcoholism from this book than any other I have read before. If you live with or know an alcoholic, you MUST read this book.
