Album Notes This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Spooky. Includes liner notes by DJ Spooky. A series created by the Six Degrees label, UNDER THE INFLUENCE features notable musical artists appointed to compile and mix their favorite recordings. Those familiar with DJ Spooky's work will not be surprised to find a track list full of similarly left-leaning electronica experimentalists, including Moby, Future Sound of London, DJ Logic, Anti-Pop Consortium, and Amon Tobin. In true postmodern fashion, DJ Spooky's set works as both a tribute to the selected artists, and as a wholly unique creation informed by his crate-digging, beat-layering, ambient shading, and formidable mixing skills. The album amounts to one long sonic collage, with each track bleeding into the next with calculated ease. At times the feel is disjointed and avant-garde, at others danceable and familiar. A true proponent of the theoretical underpinnings of the DJ aesthetic, Spooky's work invokes a kind of sonic algebra of the shards of a fragmented, media-saturated society, and proves that the true onus of synthesis and sense rests within the individual. UNDER THE INFLUENCE is, above all, a testament to this principle of reinvention, and the result is 74 minutes of challenging, fresh, and utterly absorbing music.
