Industry Reviews
These two books might very well be used in conjunction. The Ultimate T-Shirt Book, while including a good deal of instructional material, is primarily a showcase of the possibilities of the T-shirt as a blank canvas for artisans working in batik, tie-dye, painting, marbling, stamping, and screen printing. Dyes & Paints is an excellent hands-on reference manual that should be in the collection of anyone working with fabric dyes. Large public libraries should consider both these books; academic libraries will want Nobel's.

YA-No one need ever wear plain T-shirts again thanks to this aptly named book. Instructions are clear and easy to follow for six basic decorating techniques: batik, tie-dyeing, painting, marbling, stamping, and screen printing. The author covers in some detail T-shirt selection, preparation, materials, and safety tips. Ways to create original stamps and block-printing designs are also included. The real value, however, is in the more than 100 inspiring examples that leave readers eager to exercise their own creativity. Techniques used to create each of these works of wearable art range in complexity from simple sponge painting to multistep designs that require a colored shirt to be discharge dyed or bleached, then overdyed with several layers of color. Each example is described in enough detail to successfully reproduce the design. The Ultimate T-Shirt Book should leave craft- or fashion-minded teens reaching for the dye pot.-Robin Deffendall, Bull Run Regional Library, Manassas, VA
