Ultimate Spiderman for Nintendo DS- a review by Andy V!

My feelings are mostly mixed on this title, but it's still the best yet, I'd say. I've played them all, and the others are so dreary and drab. Blah, you know?
This title comes to us from the studios of Activision and Vicarious Visions. At first, when I saw the Vicarious Vision logo during startup, it immediately hearkened me right back to the days a few months prior when I was getting QUITE aggrivated having to perform repetitive tasks in very large, maze-like levels in "good ol'" Spiderman 2, which came to us from the same studio/production team.
Unlike it's predecessors, this title actually has "sprites", or characters, that are large enough to be given good detail, and can actually be seen with the naked eye. There are also more than two pallette-swapped adversaries in this game, which made for more replay value immediately, for me. In the other Spidey games, I'd been sick of kicking the same two bad guy's butts after completing the second level. Very good change, guys.
Also, this game is still in the traditional 2-D environments as the other Spidey titles across all handheld systems (minus Spidey 3 on PSP), so if you've already played any of the console versions of this game prior to your consideration of purchasing this version, then BEWARE! You're not going to get the cool web-slinging style that you've seen on the PS2 or X-Box. A cool feature that's been added-or I guess, subtracted- is that you can no longer shoot webs straight up into the sky and swing. What I mean is just that if there is nothing to swing on-you aren't going anywhere. This is one scenario where you've got similarity across all the platforms.
I was pretty happy to see that the controls have MAJORLY improved in this one, as well. In previous Spidey titles on the DS, I've spent a LOT of time in irritation because Spidey didn't shoot his web EVERY time I'd hit the trigger button. Not so in this one, True Believer! When you hit that button, Parker's gonna shoot that web. Also, Spidey uses the touch screen to lift cars off of civilians, tear open doors and disarm bombs. Super-RAD, right?
Also-as you might already know-you get to play as the dangerously sinister Venom. Venom's controls were quite innovative, I thought. See, when you play as the "Lethal Protector", you have the option of utilizing the touch screen to do a few things. Namely, you can chase down pedestrians, as well as various bad guys, and then pick them up and pull them into your venom suit to "feed" upon them. (Venom loses his strength throughout his levels, unless you feed. This DOES make certain boss levels harder, as you cannot feed off of them) You can pick up objects by tapping and dragging them, also. You can even pick up your chosen object, reel it back, and then HURL them at enemies/doors/windows/helicopters/even RHINO'S HELMET with what I felt was pretty accurately portrayed force.
In quick summary, I feel that this is the BEST title for Peter Parker in the whole DS catalogue yet. It's very colorful. It's a fast-paced game, yet they are progressive enough that you have time to get well-acquainted with it before they drop time challenges on you. The cut-scenes are faithful recreations of the title's console brethren.(If you have one already, be prepared to skip cutscenes-the audio is the EXACT same)Another thing; some of the level bosses are a little too hard, but some are VERY easy, so don't freak out when you're getting schooled so early in the game. Have fun
