This anthology does as fine a job of covering the peaks of Joe Cocker's career as any single disc possibly could. Things kick off with Cocker's studio version of the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends," which helped make him a star via his Woodstock performance. Thereafter, Cocker made his name as a gritty, soulful interpreter of material from the pop/rock world. With the guidance of then-bandleader Leon Russell, the Boxtops' "The Letter," the Fab Four's "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," and others were transformed into sweaty, soul-drenched wonders.
In the 1980s, hard-living Cocker cleaned up his act both personally and musically, scoring a hit with the romantic pop ballad "Up Where We Belong," a duet with Jennifer Warnes that was the theme for the film AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. He hadn't lost his tawdry touch, though, as proven by his popular '86 version of the randy Randy Newman tune "You Can Leave Your Hat On," also featured in another successful '80s film (9 1/2 WEEKS). ULTIMATE COLLECTION closes with a 2000 version of Leonard Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan," proof that over 30 years down the road, Cocker hadn't lost his knack for picking great material.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 - [T]racks like 'Your Are So Beautiful' and 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' are very statuesque indeed.

I bought the CD someplace second hand. It floated around my car until a few days ago. I popped it in and I Loved it!
I knew Joe Cocker only from his song “ With A Little Help From My Friends” As I listened I recognizes other songs that I never realized were by Joe Cocker.
I love this CD every one of the 20 tracts! If you are already a Joe Cocker Fan or are like me this truly is the “ Joe Cocker Ultimate Collection”

    Pros:
    Best album to date.

    Cons:
Doesn't have the song "Bye Bye Blackbird"<BR/>

Hi there everybody! I just had to take the time to tell you all about this amazing CD, the new Joe Cocker "Ultimate Collection", and first off, the album seriously lives up its name...it is indeed an "ultimate collection". I'm a huge Joe Cocker fan, always have been, so of course when I first heard about this album coming out I had to run to the store to get it. Now, if you're as big of a Joe Cocker fan as I, or even if you've ever browsed his section of Amoeba, you'd know that the man has tons of compilation CD's, so what makes this one "ultimate"? How about the fact that its the only Joe...

    Pros:
a greatest hits collection worth having

    Cons:
    not enough songs!!!

A friend of mine just told me Joe Cocker released a new greatest hits, and I can t get over how good it is. It s titled Ultimate Collection , and it is really Ultimate because it covers 30 years of his career, all of his hits from 1969-1999 are on this album. If you don t know who Joe Cocker is, let me briefly inform you; he is an awesome British rock singer that covers a majority of his songs, you will forget about the originals after listening to his soulful voice take over the songs. The collection starts off with the track, With A Little Help From My Friends , an original Beatles song,...

    Pros:
30 years of hits .. 1 cd? talk about a deal.

    Cons:
missing the hit 'Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word'

I remember seeing Joe Cocker in 69 at the first Woodstock festival, to think it was 35 years ago, my wife bought me Ultimate Collection recently and I felt like a kid again. Cocker is one of those artists with a voice you don t ever forget, the voice stays with you throughout the years and you never forget his songs. I own a great deal of Cocker albums, and this by far the most enjoyable compilation album of his. Hailing from Sheffield, Joe has made a career by covering a vast majority of his songs. One of my favorites on the Ultimate Collection is a cover of the Lovin Spoonfull s summer in...
