Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (2005, Paperback)

In a Utopian society where everyone, well almost everyone, turns beautiful on thier sixteenth birthday Tally sets off on an adventure to find a runaway "ugly" friend so that she can have the operation to turn her "pretty". In this society beauty reigns and everyone is made to feel "ugly" even though by the "Rusties" (us) society they would be normal. This fact is carefully hidden from the "uglies" who can't wait til their sixteenth birthday. However a few hundred people chose to remain ugly and every year a few more people join them rather than going through the operation to make them pretty. The book is all about Tally's adventures to find Smoke, a hidden society of "misfits", and her inner journey to discovering beauty isn't just skin deep. Sent as a spy to discover this secret society Tally finds beauty is not all it's cracked up to be and decides not to activate the pendant given to her be the "Specials", who are a cruel beauty, or does she? Although this is a teen novel I think any adult would enjoy reading it too.

Uglies is a truly amazing book. Its story line is extraordinary and it even has a great message... beauty isn't everything... my 16 year old daughter just finished it and she thought it was absolutely the best book she had ever read.
She would highly recommend it.
It flows well, and you might find it hard to put down.
Scott Westerfeld is a great author.
If you haven't read it yet.. you should. I haven't met a person yet who doesn't like it.

Well im a very picky person when it comes to book so when i first recieved this book i didnt think i was going to like it but once i picked it up i couldnt stop reading it. i love the whole serious ive never read so much in my life ever since i read these i have started reading more and more becasue i found out wat kind of books i liked to read after i read all these. so if u want a great book to read this and the other two Pretties, and Specials are the best so give them a try.

Being a 24 year old I was a little skeptical about reading a "teen" book, but I absolutely loved it. I passed the book onto my mother and she also really enjoyed the it!! I would absolutely recommend this book.

This book is a great book for teens. If you like science fiction without all the weird stuff, you should read it!

I got these books for my daughter who is now thirteen and has finally started to enjoy reading. She has finished them and loved them. She is marking them as keep forever, read again!!!

I had to buy this book for a English college course of mine. This book was a wonderful read. I truly appreciated it. Because of how I enjoyed it in the classroom, I bought the next book to the series, "Pretties" to read. "Pretties" is not a required read for class. I just bought it on my own. I hope to read all the books in the series.

I read Uglies during the course of of day and I can't wait to get the second book in the series (Pretties).

The book is about Tally Youngblood you can't wait to turn 16 so she can have the operation to turn pretty and be reunited with her long time best friend whose 16th birthday was a few months before Tally's. During the last few months of being an "Ugly" though Tally makes another friend who has the same birthday as Tally but is not looking forward to the operation and instead decides to runaway. Tally is then forced to choose either a life of being Ugly, or turning her new friend in. So Tally leaves the city to find her friend and learns more about life and the world than she could have ever dreamed.

The book ends on a highly suspenseful note, so if you plan on buying the Uglies, just trust me and pick up the Pretties at the same time!

I have enjoyed reading this book and reviewing it with friends at our book club. My daughter is now reading it and I have ordered the second one on the series.
