Two for the Money (2006, DVD)

Movie Description
TWO FOR THE MONEY, featuring Al Pacino, Rene Russo, and Matthew McConaughey, provides a most unexpected twist in its thrilling tale of high rolling bookie cons and sports gamblers. Brandon Lang (McConaughey) stars as a college football great permanently downed by an irreparable injury. He discovers a second talent, however, in predicting a game's winner and loser--a talent that makes him very attractive to Walter Abrams (Pacino), one of the country's leading sports betting consultants. Abrams takes on Lang as his protégé, moving him to Manhattan and allowing him to grow used to the lavish lifestyle. But, the seemingly perfect father/son relationship gradually unravels as Lang loses his touch and Abrams seeks too much control. The ensuing action, enrapturing even Abrams' wife Toni (Russo), resolves in a stunning revelation of con after con, leaving viewers to wonder whom to trust.

Directed by D.J. Caruso (TAKING LIVES, THE SALTON SEA), TWO FOR THE MONEY is not the first time Al Pacino has played mentor to a protégé. In similar films such as ANY GIVEN SUNDAY and SCENT OF A WOMAN, Pacino brings to bear the commandeering and charismatic personality that made him so great in THE GODFATHER and SCARFACE. The understated performances by the rest of the cast allow Pacino to shine, and to make believable Abrams' manipulation and Lang's naiveté. Combining the intriguing and often illegal world of sports gambling with the solid story of con against con, TWO FOR THE MONEY makes for a satisfying thriller.

Two for the Money - Enjoyable, but Predicatble

Two For The Money is a highly enjoyable DVD that features a strong cast (good acting from Al Pacino, Armand Assante, Jaime King, Jeremy Piven, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Garman, and Rene Russo), a great concept (sports and gambling - awesome!), the killer combination of Jeremy Piven and Matthew McConaughey) and good direction... So why isn't Two For the Money a 5/5 rated DVD? Unfortunately the film is too predictable. Its clear to see (from the previews and progressing plot) that McConaughey will hit a rough streak, Pacino will get grumpy and upset, etc. Yet Two for the Money is still enjoyable and a fun ride percisely because the characters allow it to be. This film could have easily collapsed and become a dragging movie... But it is continually saved by Piven, McConaughey and sports gambling!

I'll "Bet" You're Going to Like This Movie

This movie was so much better than I thought it would be. Although I really enjoy most of Matthew McConaughey's movies, I hadn't planned on seeing this one until my husband rented it the other night. I guess, judging by the previews, I thought it was going to be some mob type, gangster movie where everyone is killed... but the actual movie was a very pleasant surprise.

The story was about a young boy {Matthew} who loved to play sports with his father. He always hoped that by being a super athlete, and winning lots of trophy's that he would win his father's love~ however his father left when he was 10 years-old. His passion became football, and he turned out to be a star quarterback. In a big game with everything on the line, he was forced to run the ball--he scored in the last seconds--his team won--but he was hurt badly from a tackle.

Although he tried to make a comeback, he wasn't able to convince any team to sign him on. He took a dead-end job working as a phone rep. One day the sports guy is out, and Matthew has to take his place. He does a great job of picking the winning teams for that weekend's game... that's how he got noticed by Pacino's character, and where the story really takes off.

The "theme" of the movie would be that when he tries to be something he's not, his world comes crashing down. When he starts to pick the wrong teams for the clients to bet on, a lot of people go bankrupt, and it gets really intense.

The cast was all-star! Had it not had so many big name talents, it might have been a mediocre story. The chemistry between them really worked, and made it a good movie to see.

good lessons if you can get past the language pollution

I'm a big fan of both Pacino and McConaughey so I really looked forward to this.
However, the message of the movie could have been portrayed without the filthy language. My own mouth is bad enough sometimes, but this was way overboard as far as I'm concerned. It's nice to have the few movies we do anymore that have any kind of message that can be gathered, but when the language is such garbage that the lesson is ruined, what is the point?
