Synopsis In the months leading up to the August 1991 coup attempt that resulted in the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, a young dancer with the Kirov Ballet struggles to decide whether to defect while on an upcoming trip to Paris.
Set in 1991 Russia, 17-year-old Tatiana dreams of being a prima ballerina and competes fiercely for the chance to travel to Paris with the Kirov Ballet Corps. With her best friend, Vera, she plans to defect once they are in Paris and enjoy the pleasures and freedoms that the West has to offer. Although Tanya is excited by the possibilities outside of Leningrad, she dearly loves her family and her boyfriend, Sasha, and is racked by indecision. Packed with political and cultural Russian history, this historical young adult novel takes place during the failed 1991 coup against President Mikhail Gorbachev.
