Synopsis
Translated from the Russian, this third historical mystery starring diplomat/sleuth Erast Fandorin, is set in 1877, when Czarist Russia and the Ottoman Empire were at war. Varvara "Varya" Suvorova, a naïve nihilist, rashly decides to disguise herself as a boy and join her fiancé, Pyotr, a cryptographer posted to Bulgaria. When she is robbed by her guide of her belongings, her papers, and her transportation, Fandorin, who is serving as a courier for the czar, comes to her aid. He escorts Varya to the Russian camp, only to find that Pyotr has been accused of tampering with coded messages. Will Fandorin be able to clear Pyotr's name and find the true spy?

Industry Reviews
"Akunin does a superb job of rendering the immediacy of battle....[T]he quirky Fandorin and determined Varya stand out amid the turmoil of their surroundings."
Publishers Weekly (02/21/2005)

"[T]he quaint language and vivacious humour help keep the reader interested."
Times Literary Supplement - Tom Roundell

"Very elegant and assured. The period detail--both comic and dashing--glitters impeccably. Akunin has designed his own diorama of a world at war, but it's unlikely that history was quite as entertaining as this."
Literary Review - Philip Oakes (02/01/2005)

"Akunin is wildly popular in his homeland, and deservedly so....[T]he wealth of period detail...is impressive."
New Yorker (05/09/2005)

"Akunin provides readers with vivid historical detail, witty dialogue, and colorful characters. Those who love historical mysteries and Russian intrigue will be delighted with his latest offering."
