Turistas (DVD, 2007, Checkpoint; Dual Side; Lenticular; Sensormatic; Unrated)

Love it with full force, Horror Fans !! The "Early 20's Victim" SLASHER film. (Following in the Legendary Footsteps of "Friday the 13th", "Halloween"., and the film that saved the dying horror genre,... "Scream".)
In "Turistas" (UNRATED), six skinny, mostly beautiful young people find themselves stranded on a remote beach in Brazil. These typically-clueless world travelers, think they have found paradise when it turns out that there's a great open-air bar here in the middle of absolutely nowhere. But like the slacker boys in "Hostel", this bunch is about to find out that appearances are often deceiving.
A night of drinking and dancing ensues, but the hangover is where the nightmarish onslaught begins., as they awaken to find everything but the clothes on their backs gone. And that's just the beginning, since their new pal Kiko, (Agles Steib), who spent the evening practicing his English on them, is about to lead them straight into Hell.
"Turistas" is "NOT" one of those complete gorefests where one can assume from the beginning that everyone is going to die. Rather, it's in classic slasher genre that, some will make it and some won't. Will it be protective big brother Alex, (Josh Duhamel)? His adventurous baby-sister Bea, (Olivia Wilde), or her best friend, Amy (Beau Garrett)? How about Pru (Alias' Melissa George)? Or Finn (Desmond Askew) and Liam (Max Brown), two charming English youth who have come to Brazil in hopes of hooking some beautiful Brazilian women?
It's not too hard to figure out, because editor-turned-screenwriter Michael Ross' script is a bit obvious about those doomed. This seems to be the only fault to pick out from this film. But then again., it's always been obvious in the "Typically-Loved Slashers" as far back as "Friday the 13th". Maybe I just got spoiled with the abrupt., not-so-sure killings of the savior-film "Scream". Irregardless., obvious-or-not does not take away a bit from this crafty horror piece., paying it's dues to lie in homage amongst really good slashers.
In particularly well-done cinematography, the film matches scenery beauty, character beauty, (the soon-to-be victims must be attractive or we, of course, don't care who dies next)., with destructive horror and torture. Worthy scenes where Zamora resembles "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's" Leatherface, sharing here a new Psycho., with a certain zest for causing pain and terror.
Of course, what slasher goes without it's gore? In spots held with tension rather than true fright, the characters come fully alive., as some meet their gory ends with the stalker., and others battle to stay alive.
Director John Stockwell additionally adds some late-staged suspense with an underwater cave pursuit., reminiscent of "The Cave" and "The Descent"., which provides a nice venue change late in the film.
All-In-All, this is a 4-star slasher. Truly enjoyable at face-value. You will get what you expect, just don't expect the 5-star horror classic of "Scream"., rather expect the pleasant "scare-me", (almost root-for-the-killer) format that Jason Voorheas and Michael Myers gave birth to.
