Recorded in the charmed period between the initial success of ELTON JOHN and superstar extravaganzas like GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION, a loose concept album about the American West, was a strange, sideways move for Elton John and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. A album in the traditional sense, it is best heard as a piece, with songs that pick up and expand on each other's moods and settings. Notice, for example, the progression of characters from the young fighter waving "My Father's Gun," to the retired and forgotten "Talking Old Soldiers," to the protagonist of "Where To Now St. Peter?," shot down by "a sweet young foreign gun" and ready to be judged by his maker.
The mood holds from the sepia-toned LP cover art to John's songwriting, influenced by folk and country music and by The Band's MUSIC FROM BIG PINK. Among the songs it introduced were "Country Comfort," which Rod Stewart covered on GASOLINE ALLEY, and "Come Down In Time," later done by both Judy Collins and Sting. Though the rollicking piano epic "Burn Down The Mission" and "Amoreena" became FM-radio and concert staples, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION remains the only John studio album without a hit single, a fact that doesn't affect the impact of this excellent country-rock outing.

Editorial Reviews
3 Stars - Good - ...a slightly eccentric excursion into the imagery of American hicksville...
Q (08/01/1995)

...TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION is simpler than John's last album and next time around I hope he goes all the way and gets down to nothing but the basics. He is one of the few who is good enough not to need anything else...

Tumbleweed Connection/ Elton John/ SACD Review

I had the MFSL Gold CD version of this album and had heard this SACD version at a friend's house in 5.1 Surround. Then I listened to the the remastered stereo version on the SACD disk. Then, I finally listened to the MFSL Gold CD version. In comparison, technology has caught up to the older MFSL Ultradisc. I have to say that there was considerate improvement in sound quality at a lower price.

But the system used in this listening experiment was not high end, but adequate. The system was comprised of a pair a DCM speakers, a pair of Klipsch towers, a Yamaha center speaker and a Yamaha 5250 5.1 Surround Sound Receiver. The SACD disc and the MFSL Gold Disc were played on a Sony 5 disc DVD-CD changer equipped for SACD and plugged in as a external decoder into the Yamaha Receiver. The subwoofer was turned off both in the receiver and the Sony disc changer as the size of the speakers provided adequate bass.

The SACD had improved highs and good mid level lows. The complete lack of hiss really fascinated me as this was slightly detectable on the MFSL Gold CD.

While the MFSL CD version of this album is highly collectible and no longer in print (and it is 24k gold), I have to say that the SACD version of this album has a better sound at a lower price. This is primarily due to new technology since the original issue of the MFSL Gold Ultradisc version.

I think like most people, I consider myself an Elton John Greatest Hits fan. Outside of that box, I was very new to all of these songs that were now new to me. From what I gather of the six studio albums I own of Elton's, Tumbleweed Connection is the only album that was written without an attempt for a hit single, and there were no singles released from this album either. My deduction is that it is because of this reason that Tumbleweed is one of Elton's strongest albums as a whole.
The SACD is multichannel surround, and it sounds really awesome

    Pros:
    Perfect Album.

    Cons:
    None

In 2004, Island Records released a group of Elton's earlier albums in the SACD format. I am always hungry for these types of releases and when they finally release titles by a great artist I am first in line. I luckily snagged up the five of them I needed, (I already owned Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on DVD-Audio) via the BMG music club. They were having this amazing sale of free shipping and buy one, pay half price for everything else. I think I paid somewhere around $45 for five SACD titles. You can't do much better than that. The last one I finally played was this title, Tumbleweed...
