  Gritty Tale of Redemption

A gritty, touching story about redemption in a world of violence and poverty in South Africa. Strong performances by a cast of mostly unknowns. Lead actor Presley Chweneyagae will disgust you with his cold-blooded violent ways and then will win your sympathy as he realizes the error of his ways. A worthwhile addition to your collection.

  Review for Tsotsi

This is a great movie, it has the impact that "hotel rwanda" gives off. It's very moving, this is the movies for the poignant people. Imagine having another person change your life, now imagine having another person you don't even know change your life. This thug, Tsotsi, is a bad guy, who's a straight up gangster with no decency, but he still manages to pull his life together and finally do the right thing for a child.

It's not like the box office hits in america, this movie is going to make you cry.

  Excellent movie!
Review created: 07/08/08

I have traveled to South Africa before. I love to watch foreign movies. I rented it as soon as it came out on DVD a couple years ago, loved it, and decided to buy it recently. I have let my friends watch it and they have really liked it also.

  Good movie!!

This was a good movie! It takes place in South Africa. It has sub titles. It is about a boy who had a difficult child hood supposedly and his mother dies of an illness. ( there is not much detail of this, but I guess that is what they are trying to tell the viewer) He watches his father hurt his dog by kicking it and breaking it's legs just because the dog kept barking. The boy then runs away to live in the street commiting crime after crime with his friends in order to get money. He is the leader of their clique, the brains in all their operations. He then steals a womans car even though he cannot drive, only to find that there is a baby inside after shooting the woman leaving her paralyzed. He decides to take care of the baby and takes it home. Even though he does not know how to care for the child he tries and but his effort fall short. He cannot change diapers and does not know what or how to feed the baby. He puts that baby under his bed in a shopping bag to sleep and causes ants crawl all over the baby's face because he gave the baby condensed milk to drink and left the house with the baby under the bed in a shopping bag. For a moment I think he even forgot that he still had the child because he would go out with his friends while the baby was under the bed in the shopping bag. I found the treatment of the child to be very disturbing! His last reort is to hold a random woman that also has a child at gun point as she is entering her home with her child. He forces the woman to breast feed the baby and tells her that it is his child. He threatens to kill her if she does not. I find this very disturbing also! The woman offers to take care of the child for him for free. he accepts but threatens her to kill her if she tells anyone. He then bothers a crippled man (begger) in a wheel chair in the subway, The man spits on him so He claims that the man is not crippled and demands that he get up and walk. He also scares the crippled man so badly that the crippled man urinates on himself. He also take all the crippled man's money and throws it on the ground knowing that the crippled man will not be able to get it due to his diability. He reminises of his child hood from time to time. The rest of the movie drags until he gets caught by the cops because he went back to the home where the baby's family lived to return the child. He decides to ring the door bell and wait for someone to come to the door instead of just leaving the baby ate the door. He could have gotten away with it but, maybe he wanted to go to jail. I like this movie I found it to be quite interesting. The ending though was not too conclusive and it dragged a little during the middle, but overall it was good. I would recommed that anybody that is into foreign films should check this out. However I do not recommend this for extra sensitive people due to the treatment of the baby in this movie. I thoughtI was a little sad in a tear jerking kinda way.

I loved this movie, it's odd how even thought Tsotsi is a villan, you start feeling really bad for him as the movie unfolds. I hope to see more from this writer/director and the main charactor.

This was an achingly beautiful movie that I wanted to add to my collection. A story of desperation and redemption, it displays that despite harshness, hardship, and cruelty of circumstance, even the seemingly most lost person possesses the capacity for and need of unconditional love. Wonderful music.

People change your perception of the world
Review created: 10/24/06

We may have a tendency to shy away from certain people because they seem to be going down a road of life that we won’t choice for ourselves. This may be good in most cases, but every now and then a person you meet or see may need some healing from a wound in their past. The person may not know they need healing but once that healing begins there no telling where their true destiny lies. This is what happens in Tsotsi. The greatest example to me is when Tsotsi meet the man in the wheelchair. Tsotsi’s life begins to change. This movie is one of hope and restoration, though Tsotsi never gets to live a restore life. This is a must see movie

  Great movie
Review created: 10/15/06

Wow! what a movie! Brilliant acting and direction. A great soundtrack and introduction to South African contemporary hip-hop/rap. No wonder it won the best foreign film at last year's Academy Awards! The fact that it is sub-titled in English does not detract from the movie; being in the native language is more natural anyway. I recommend it.
