This is one of the better made for cable movies you will see (made in
1998 for HBO), it is the story of Private David Manning (Ron Eldard), who
is shell shocked and exhausted after serving on the front line for an
extended period-but one of the only surviving members of his platoon. He
requests a dismissal, but instead is promoted to sergeant and given a
platoon of inexperienced soldiers to lead. Manning finds only further
devastation when he and the platoon he is given are put into the battle
of the Hurgen Forest-one of the bloodest fights of WWII. Great battle
scenes ensue as the platoon attacks and defends their positions. Director
John Irvin who directed both Hamburger Hill and The Dogs of War continues
his excellent work with this one. WWII students and war movie lovers will
certainly enjoy this one.

  BATTLE OF HURTGEN FOREST

I wanted to learn more about the WWII battle of Hurtgen Forest having heard many stories about it from my late father. The level of carnage and futility closely parallel his stories, more lives were lost than the Normandy beach invasion. The battle is little known having been eclipsed by the Battle of the Bulge which occured a week later. These were truly hellish events for the ground soldier. I noticed period incorrect weapons, ie bazooka, which my father claimed wouldn't penetrate German armour anyway! Lots of carnage portrayed, that part is accurate.

The only thing I would say hinders this movie is that it was produced by HBO.
The writing is first rate, this makes the characters very convincing in there roles. I do not think HBO had the finances to pour into this movie like they do on projects today.
This movie is a must see and makes an excellent addition to any movie collection. You do not have to be a war movie fan to enjoy this story, the war and battles are just fluff compared to the dialoge of the characters

"When Trumpets Fade" brings home the true sentiment to what some soldiers feel with war. Although I don't agree with it, no one is really prepared to face death due to incompetent commanding officers! This film puts you into a disgruntled soldiers perspective of watching thousands of soldiers die because of his command's unwilling plight to admit they need support to take out German fortified positions, armour, and 88mm artillery. The main character becomes entangled in saving his own skin. WATCH THIS FILM! BUY THIS FILM! PAY ATTENTION TO THE FILM AND YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!! suggestions for this genre of films include : Band of Brothers DVD Collectors set and.... "A Midnight Clear" these are some excellent suggestions as well!!!! YOU WILL BE AMAZED!!!!!

Soldiers are born when bullets fly, and Cannons Roar
Review created: 09/06/09

The last time I seen this video was back when I was a teen. I later on Enlisted in the US Army in 2006. My Father told me before I left the MEPS (Military Entry Processing Station) " Soldiers Are Born, When Bullets Fly, and Cannons Roar, Make Me Proud Son." Now I know where he got the saying from. This DVD is one of the Best WWII movies I seen, Yet they all are the best. let us not forget our heros, fallen comrads, service men and women.Let not our heros be made and then forgotton. All gave some, some gave all........

The picture quality was excellent. This is the first time I have seen this movie and it is one of those I will view again and again. Very realistic, mostly on attitudes not so much the blood, etc. A must have for any War movie buff.

Grim, gripping story of a little known battle from WWII
Review created: 01/30/09

A better than average movie much in the same vein as "Saving Private Ryan". War in WTF is not pretty, it's ugly, uncomfortable and covered in blood and excrement. The protagonist has no illusions about trying to win the war, all he wants to do is live to see another day and he's not particular about pushing someone else in front of a bullet meant for him. The Battle for the Hurtgen Forest was a bloody fiasco that should've and could've been avoided with the proper use of aerial bombardment and flanking maneuvers. Gritty and historically accurate I recomend this movie to the military historian and casual fan alike.

I consider this movie average because of the historical inaccuracies, but it is a good movie nevertheless.

For a WWII movie fan this is one of the best I have ever seen. About actual events and shows how ironic the circle goes round. Not for the faint of heart. Graphic, and true to life violence. Shows the viewer what war truly is and how ugly it as it explodes across your screen.

I liked the movie a lot, although it did not have a lot of big name actors, but the scenes were pretty much true to WII movies, and I like most of them.....Dan
