The Truman Show (DVD, 2005, Special Collector's Edition)

This film is really a classic! The underlying theme for me is how the world/culture we live in is so "made up", as if on a theatre stage. For me it is like The Matrix but without the violence thrown in. It brings me to tears at the end every time I watch it. What a powerful image....I won't say more if someone reading this has not seen it. The entire film is worth watching it to the end to experience that powerful image! Represents stepping out of the facade of life as the media creates it and stepping into my "real life". Very inspiring!

The Truman is one of the greatest movies ever made. It has a fresh plot that is very imaginative. The acting and writing are fabulous.

This is one of my husbands favorite movies to watch when its on TV so I decided to buy it for him. We love it.

Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is a young man in the quaint community of Seahaven, a little island, leading a regular life as an insurance salesman with his wife Meryl (Laura Linney). What he doesn't know is that all the world is actually watching his life. Unknowingly, Truman is at the center of a huge TV show that started with his birth. Ever since that day "The Truman Show" has become the most successful TV show on the planet, airing in all countries around the globe. His entire life is a travesty, a conglomerate of actors pretending to be relatives, friends and partners. Even his wife is a paid actress on her daily job. His entire world is in fact a giant soundstage with meticulously choreographed events that make up the life as he knows it. Occasionally strange things happen, like huge stage lights that seemingly fall from the sky or people trying to tell him that he is being observed, but caught in his own, whimsical world, Truman never really fathoms out their meanings. One day however, on his way to work, he can overhear a conversation on the radio that clearly indicates that someone is watching his every step, reporting everything he does over the air. Suspicious, he tries to find out more and eventually decides that in fact, people are observing him, somehow directing his life. He wants to break free and tries to leave the little island, but every attempt results in a failure.
Then, one night he decides to set sail by himself to discover the truth of his existence and to meet his maker.

Great movie! Really funny and a fun movie to watch. Jim Carrey does a great job in this role. Highly recommended.

I didn't think I would like the Truman Show. I was expecting Jim Carrey over the top humour and contorted faces. I was wrong. Really wrong! The Truman Show is the epitome of "reality shows" (and hopefully our own reality shows will never go as far). Truman grows up as the unknowing star of his own reality show. Everything is television, and nothing is real-- even though it's real to Truman. Jim Carrey is brilliant as Truman, and Ed Harris plays the steely and yet passionate producer/director/'god' watching over Truman. I liked this movie because it really showed off some of the uglier parts of what television can be, but also made distinct that the beautiful parts of our lives, like love, are real no matter what. Give this movie a shot. It's dramatic and moving and funny, and NOT you typical Jim Carrey film. Yay!

What a great movie. Jim Carey is amazing. Usually just good in a purely comedic role Carey shines in this more serious role. Still at the same time there are many instances of his comedic brilliance shining through.

I did not really like the movie that much because I find it a bit eccentric, but I watched the movie a long time ago and I thought I would see it again.
