Publisher's Note Tekleh is curious. Tekleh likes adventure. And trouble always seems to find him, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. One day Tekleh's father decides that a gebeta (also known as mancala) board will help keep Tekleh occupied--and out of trouble. Tekleh sets off with his two goats and the gebeta board for the grazing place in the hills. Almost immediately he meets a group of traders who offer him a fine knife for a masinko, then the masinko for a drum, then the drum for a bag of corn....So how is it that Tekleh returns how with a gebeta board and two well-fed goats?
Industry Reviews "Kurtz' text is nicely styled but rambles a bit, just managing to keep the folkoloric pattern intact...Bernhard's earth-toned, organically rounded compositions are openfaced and often funny in details..." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Betsy Hearne (05/19/1997)
"...Bernhard's illustrations provide an enchanting window into the culture and people of Eritrea." Lewis
