Tropic Thunder (DVD, 2008, 2-Disc Set - Director's Cut - Sensormatic Packaging)

Starting with the best fake-trailers this side of Grindhouse, TROPIC THUNDER develops into the most uniquely wacky blend of satire/action/ and gross-out I've ever seen. At first it appears to be a straight-up spoof on popular war films, then it becomes a film within a film, then an attack on Hollywood and the film industry in general. Also present are some rather shocking (and hilarious) sight gags (exploding film-crew members, the brutal slaughter of an endangered species) that managed to catch everyone off guard (yet not offend them).

The main reason TROPIC THUNDER works so well though is it's stellar ensemble cast. You have the likes of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, and Nick Nolte all turning in terrific comedic performances that they obviously had fun with. Tom Cruise gives the extended cameo of the year as a studio executive, while Tobey Maguire and a slew of other actors make notable appearances. Ultimately it is Downey Jr. who steals almost every scene as the platoon's very white, African-American squad leader.

Rude, witty, and ballsy, TROPIC THUNDER is a great time at the movies. It's hard finding worth-while large budget comedies these days, but DIRECTOR Ben Stiller, supported by a strong cast and a great premise, has proved himself to be the right man for the task.

I won't get into the DvD extras, such as an alternate ending, and extra scenes, because you can read about that yourself.

Instead, I want to say that the movie itself is more than just a comedy, it's parody of certain actors and directors. It's an opinion on how certain people in Hollywood take themselves too seriously. The movie needs to be watched a few times to get all of the subtle nuances that give it a "deeper" meaning. (Although, I hesitate to use that word in light of the fact that this movie is a spoof film, on the surface)

Of course, there are more than a few memorable scenes that give the viewer a tummy ache from so much laughter.

Bottom line: This isn't your average spoof film (a la "Meet the Spartans" or "Disaster Movie"). It actually delivers a message most of us agree with, while entertaining with a more refined wit than other spoof films, to date.

It's a funny movie that I would recommend to everyone. Robert Downey Jr continues to make a great comeback with this movie plus the rest of the cast is great to. Check it out!

Movie arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I would recommend buying from this seller again. Movie was funny and was enjoyed by all.

I saw this on my birthday soon after just getting my wisdom teeth pulled....probably not a good idea because I was laughing a lot.

Hilarious movie from beginning to end. Great cast and unique premise. Decided to buy this movie because i saw it in theaters and loved it then, figured I'd have it at the house to share with others.

This is one of the greatest movies of all time. Ben Stiller is a genius. I can watch this over and over again. Love all the actors. Jack Black I've never seen better.

This was a good experience and the cstmr srvce was excellent. The product was great and the delivery time was just as promised.

I'm not the type of person that watches a movie more then once; the only movies I've done this with are Schindler's List, Nightmare before Christmas, Super Troopers, half baked, and most of Quintin Tarentino's movies. I realize this list is odd, but I'm an odd person who happens to be particular. Anyway, I watched this movie twice in one day which is even unheard of for the few rewatchable movies in my library. I'm really surprised because I can't STAND Jack Black but, he wasn't too annoying in this movie. I loved Robert Downey, Jr and Danny McBride. Ben Stiller did a wonderful job on the cast and the movie.

Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely hillarious in this movie. My husband and I quote his lines all the time!

With such a loaded cast, there are few people who can honestly say that there is no one in this film who actually impresses him (Stiller, Black, Downey Jr., Hader, Nolte, McConaughey, Cruise, Hewitt, Bateman, etc.). Because this whole film is a mockery of actors, war movies and Hollywood in general, having such a cast makes it all the better.

While there are still the cheap and easy laughs that have made Ben Stiller and Jack Black popular, perhaps more impressive is the underlying and pervasive satire requiring a slightly more intellectual humor (emphasis on "slightly"). The whole premise of the film is absolutely absurd, and maybe that's what makes it all the better.

There is a lot to applaud for in this film, including the stellar casting, but there is no doubt that the most outstanding aspect is the plot and its satire of Hollywood and war movies. If you're looking for a good laugh with a little action thrown into the mix, there is no better option than "Tropic Thunder."

As soon as I saw the preview for this movie I knew I was gonna love it! I didnt get to see it in the theater but I rented it as soon as it came out! This movie had everything going for it. Hysterical all the way through, great storyline, the directing, it was filmed like a masterpiece, great acting and cast. I bought it finally cause I was waiting for the price to go down. You have to get the 2 disc directors cut/unrated. You will get more for your money and if you loved the movie as much as me then you will really enjoy it.
Robert Downey Jr made this movie with his character and performance. My fave parts was the beginning of the film when it appears to still be trailers for other movies but it is actually part of the movie. Tom Cruise's small part was great. My son loves the end when he dances. My son copies him, so funny! I am even thinking of buying the soundtrack cause the music was all so good in this film. I gave it 5 stars for excellent based on how much I loved it. It does have some crude language and humor though, really strong sexual language type of jokes.

By far, at the top of my funniest movies ever made list. How can it not be with the comedic genius of Ben Stiller and Jack Black. A wonderful surprise performance from Robert Downey, Jr. as an blonde, blue-eyed Austrian portraying a black man. And Tom Cruise - didn't know he could move like that.

This movie is hilarious!! Robert Downey JR. is the best part of this whole movie. He is the reason I bought this movie.

Worth the purchase - watched it on the big screen, rented the dvd. A must have for any DVD collection.

Sometimes I am in the mood for a violance fix. Tropic of Thunder fits that bill and then some. It is very dark and funny. The characters in the movie are very original, especailly Rober Downey Jr. character. Very over the top and well done. It filled the bill of a great action movie and then some..

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! oh and thanks soooo much!! everything you said was true... it came quickly too... umm It is hilarious and i love the special features too... i saw this in the theaters the first time then i saw it on dvd that my friend had. it was the director's cut and i knew i HAD to have this... It was soooo great and funny... It came on PPV and i watched it like 5 times on there and I knew i had to buy this... hahaha

i did not really care for this ben stiller movie.he has much better movies out there.it did have its moments of laughter which were few and far between.the highlights were robert downey jr. playing an austrlian who had skin graphs to play a black actors role.the moment of laujghter for me was when robert"s charecter and the other african american would argue.worth a watch once,but do not recommend to own

"Tropic Thunder' is simply one of the funniest films I've ever seen....The concept, characters, casting & execution are brilliant. Every bit, every gag, every performance is a gem.... Anyone who loves a great comedy needs to have this inspired laugh fest....
