I rented this move several years ago, not really knowing anything about it. It just sounded good, and it was! This is for anyone who understands the pull to "go home" again. It can be cathartic. It is a sentimental journey for the main character and the movie may bring you to tears. It is a movie the whole family can watch. I receommend it highly.

  THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Geraldine Page won an Oscar for her role in The Trip to Bountiful. An elderly woman(Page) reflects on life, love and family as she tries to return to her hometown one last time before she dies.
Her hometown is almost gone from the map but her childhood house remains. She chases shadows and memories and comes to terms with her life and the fact that she will soon die.
Bountiful is rural and she ventures by bus to see her home one more time. On her trip with a fellow passenger (who helped her escape from her son and daughter-n-law, who are trying to stop her) she tells the story of her one true love. This moment in cinema history is one of the saddest ever.
Life marches on and before you know it, the end of the road and your journey is reached. You have found Bountiful and all it's glory.

The Old House Through Her Eyes

I truly like, probably love, this film, find it precious, the acting excellent, the story very true to life in every character. I wish she did not have to go back to what she fled from, but life is just not able to go foreward backwards. Yet in the end she did actually get to feel the dirt once more, and I understand the need in such an unforgettable treasure. She did keep her check for her own from now on, and have her fate free most of the time to sing all she wanted from now on too....so she did accomplish quite a lot by her trip afterall. I , like her, could just picture the old house all painted and cant see why it cant still be so and would love to move into it myself all fixed up, new paint smell, fresh curtains blowing in the breeze, red petunias around the front...but reality is reality, her neighbor lady dead, Bountiful dead, son all grown up, it takes money to drill a well, and every dusk on the old porch the same, all alone, from here to there.

I found the recapturing of the old gas station and the stillness of small town street remarkable, the emptiness remaining in the departure of the girl on the bus, the departure of the town and its inhabitants forever.

I loved this movie, because it got me in touch with some of what I will face when I become an elderly woman. There will be somewhat different issues, than the character in the movie, because of the era difference, but will definately have the same physical and emotional experience. Even though in the year 2008, we are much more educated and women have more liberties, we are still faced with the same delimas the elderly have always faced in this country--not being taken care of with enough dignity and health care till they die, and dying in too much pain in every way. This I have witnessed first hand with both my folks. This film showed how unaware this son and daughter-in-law were of the emotional needs of the elderly Mother. I also loved the character's experence on the trip home to Bountiful. I admired her guts and determination, not to let anything stand in her way, even though her dignity and efforts were thwarted at every turn. I believe it was Geraldine Page's best performance, even though ALL of her performances set her apart from every actress in the history of acting. She had a gift for giving you as the audience, exactly what her character felt, emoting every emotion, that as I watched became my emotion and pain even to tears. Even through her sorrow, and painful past of loss, she showed her strength through her faith in God. And she felt she had the right to move toward her goal till it was finished, and was ready to accept her future with the same family that had not accepted her need to go home. In the end, she was the one who finally reached her son, to face the truth, and realize his own failures as a son and husband. Most of all she helped me feel grateful , because she felt grateful, with the simple gift of going home again. It is an important movie for all ages to see-because it is reality for all of us. Thanks, Paula

Geraldine Page deserved the Academy Award! She plays an elderly woman determined to travel "home", before going Home. She goes on a joyous, but sometimes bitter-sweet, celebration-of-life journey.

Love the movie. The story is something that all younger people should see to understand their elderly friends and relatives better. Great price for a new DVD and seller's service is top notch.

This movie strikes at the heart of the things we love most and fear most about life. Geraldine Page is wonderful in bringing to light the injustices and inevitability of growing old and becoming dependant on our children. This movie moved me to be more caring and understanding of my grandparents, and the elderly in general. I've watched it many times with tears, laughter, and always imagining myself in her place and what I would do in her situation. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone. It is sobering, so it's not one you'll want to watch when you need a pick-me-up.

  Great movie
Review created: 12/03/09

A triumphant tale of an elderly woman's journey home, The Trip to Bountiful stars Geraldine Page in "the performance of a lifetime" (Variety) – and a role that won* her an Academy Award®. "Funny, adventurous, suspenseful…but ultimately uplifting as a demonstration of the human spirit" (Los Angeles Times), The Trip to Bountiful is "perfect on just about every level" (Boxoffice)! Carrie Watts (Page) is an elderly woman with a weak heart – but of strong determination. Trapped in a tiny apartment under the care of her cowardly son and his shrewish wife, Carrie is determined to escape and return to her girlhood home. Seizing her chance – and her meager Social Security check – Carrie sets out on an unforgettable quest to make peace with her past…and the secrets of her heart that draw her ever homeward.

I absolutely love love this wonderful movie!
A beautiful story of a what happens when age and life are not the way you want it to be. All you want to do is go back to the home you knew and loved when you were young.
Of coures not everyone feels the way you do and want you to remain as you are even if you are miserable.
