A tribute to Magic Sam Maghatt assembles three separate bands, two of which are fronted by musicians who played with the legendary Chicago blues guitarist in the fifties and sixties. The disc encompasses songs either written by or associated with the West Side Soul of Magic Sam. Highlights include Magic Slim (christened with that moniker by Magic Sam) and the Teardrops version of "All Your Love," saxophonist Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang doing "Riding High" and J.W. Williams and the Chi-Town Hustlers "Love Me With a Feeling." Even though bassist Williams was a bit young to have actually played with Sam, his West Side influence is obvious. While many blues tribute releases are better in concept than execution, this one delivers. And who knows, maybe someone who has never heard the original Magic Sam releases will be turned on enough by this tribute to check out the originals. Wouldn't that be the ultimate tribute! ~ Al Campbell
