Album Notes Personnel includes: Mel Torme (vocals); Randy Sandke (trumpet, flugelhorn); Ken Peplowski (clarinet, tenor saxophone); John Colianni (piano); Howard Alden (guitar); John Leitham (bass); Donny Osborne (drums). "Without A Word Of Warning" (Alan Broadbent, arranger) was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Mel Torme is known for, among other things, his stylistic range, and on A TRIBUTE TO BING CROSBY he shows he is as comfortable in an orchestral pop setting as he is with a small jazz combo. Crosby was a major influence on Torme, so the performances here take on an added dimension of warmth and loving attention; and one can hear that affection and admiration in Torme's delivery. The repertoire focuses largely on Crosby's hits from the 1930s, including "Moonlight Becomes You" and "Pennies from Heaven." At times the strings prove somewhat syrupy and overbearing, and there is precious little of the Velvet Fog's famous scatting, but these drawbacks are easily overlooked given the strength of Torme's performances. A TRIBUTE TO BING CROSBY unites the vibrant spirits of two legendary vocal talents.
Editorial Reviews ...with one great rhythm singer saluting another, the up-beat aspect is neglected, but Torme is in Concert Hall mood and amazing voice. Mojo (01/01/1995)
