This was a very very good movie. It held my attention throughout and was good in all areas: Acting, Plot, etc.
One of the producers who was sent to see the movie and was a friend of Fellicity was into the movie for 20 minutes and wondering when Fellicity was going to appear before he realized she was Bree, the mother in the movie. The DVD commentary was very good also.

  ALL-IN-ONE FATHER-MOTHER-SON
Review created: 07/30/07

Timely, Topical and Twisted,Transamerica delivers the entire package. A least for awhile. (LOL) Felicity Huffman plays a man waiting to become a woman.(Transexual) Even though she really is a woman.
Felicity earned an Oscar nomination (and should have won over spoiled Reese Witherspoon) and left her Desperate Housewives roots of glamour and shtick behind. She is wonderful in this family comedy/drama.
Bree (Huffman) sets out on a journey to find her son,Toby (Kevin Zegers) (one she never knew she had) and rescue him from drugs, turning tricks and gay porn. This mission will complete his requirements (post op) and give closure to the man who wants to become a woman.
Hottie Kevin Zegers, plays gay and the con-artist role very well. He tries to seduce his mother/father as they road trip back to Bree's California. Along the way we meet Bree's family. Her mother played by Fionnula Hughes is cunning British acting gone wild. (But she plays it with an American accent.)
We hear the theme song sung by Dolly Parton which adds to the this American road movie mystique.
As their adventures ensue, some typical cookie cutter movie HIGH-jinks happen while some of their other adventures will surprise and delight the viewers.
Kevin Zegers plays Toby and cements his place in American cinema along with Felicity Huffman.
Some people will hate this movie but it's themes are real and we realize as we watch it, the word family can encompass many people- chosen or otherwise. If we open our hearts and our minds, we find people, however different they may be, just trying to survive in world created by someone else.

There are those films that just stay in my memory....
Review created: 12/06/06

I honestly couldn't tell you anything about some of the movies I've seen in the past year. Some of the films are just so bad that my memory seems to just erase the movie from my consciousness. Ask me what "Silent Hill" or "Loaded Weapon 1" was about, and I honestly couldn't tell you. I know I saw the films, but they were so bad I forgot the plots and actors involved.

I won't be forgetting about "Transamerica" anytime soon. It's simply a near perfect movie. I think just about everyone can relate to the characters in this film, even though we may be nothing like them.

Well you can understand why Felicity Huffman received in oscar nominations for this movie and an Emmy Award for Desperate Housewives. She is the movie.

The main character in this movie certainly made it a blockbuster. Felicity Huffman could not have been better, she played the part perfectly. She brought the story to life and made it very believable. I definitely see why she won an academy award for her performance. Just the kind of movie I like - has a beginning, a middle and an end - doesn't keep you hanging at the end wondering what happened.

  BEYOND THE STARS
Review created: 09/01/06(updated 09/01/06)

Felicity Huffman portrays a "man" going through the change -- to become a woman.
If that were it, then it would be just another transgendered movie... but this real gurl shows that she' more woman then just another "Desperate Housewife" making movies for grins!

The film was done before making her debut on Desperate Housewives, and shows talents beyond the stars. The movie is original in its "characterization" of a man wanting desperately to become a real woman, and makes Julie Andrews from Victor/Victoria fame seem transparent. The depth of Felicity's role as "Brie" is believable, as she struggles to be the "father" her son never had... This works well, beyond the "cheap flicks" that have been made previously.... that portray transgendered roles as psycho-messes of society. Makes you really want this sex change to happen! See, fairy-tales can come true!

Recommended for all audiences - it's about time that real life comes to the big screen!

Great actress !!!! The character has a great development and Felicity can carry it out greatly.

It's incredible the way she do that voice, and the way she can act like a transgerder person, the way she moves her hands, the make-up.

Just Outstanding.

  TransAmerica
Review created: 02/10/09

Finally, a motion picture that captures the inner feelings of a transgendered person and the lives that change with the transformation. Felicity Huffman captured the essence of the male-to-female crossover with charm, elegance and respect. Not a cheap shot at the transgendered populace, TransAmerica also shows, in a time-compressed manner, the change that family sometimes goes through, once the "secret" is out. We see the social engendered transformation to the end of the film. It deserved more than just a handful of award nominations last year (2008). Every family who has a transgendered person within should see this movie, then embrace that person for the courage to make the transition, rather than suffer in silence and encumber further silent sadness.

A touching eye-opener! Huffman is magnificent!!
Review created: 01/09/09
by:

This movie screams for a sequel. Felicity Huffman plays a difficult, often socially disdained role but comes out smelling like a rose! One cannot help but sympathize (or even fall in love) with the character, "Bree Osborne," as she struggles for identity. What is eye-opening is that the secret plight of transexual individuals is revealed as the movie unfolds. Kevin Zegers, Fionnula Flanigan, Burt Young, Elisabeth Pena and Graham Greene all add to the icing on the cake in their various supporting roles. Music by David Mansfield adds just the right touch. A few of the scenes can be jarring to the unprepared viewer but they are necessary to strengthen the role that Huffman plays. There's subtle comedy mixed with bites of drama throughout giving it just the right balance. Huffman is magnificent because she is a genuine woman playing the role of a man who is undergoing the final stages of the metamorphosis into a woman. Nothing less can be said about the special voice Huffman developed and uses consistently to support her role; it took tremendous effort! Noticeably, a low budget movie but it still earns five stars!

The movie was filled with surprises and a lot of emotion. Felicity was amazing in this role. If the subject matter of trans-gender doesn't offend you you should watch this movie. The movie is much more than a film about a sex change operation.

The movie seemed very well written, directed, and acted with characters that where real to many, but also developed into a character you cared about. I would recommend the movie to anyone who is an adult and seeks to understand more about this subject matter and the family issues that arrise from it.

A Brave New World for the new Millenium!
Review created: 04/15/08

Felicity Huffman (and pretty much everyone else) is extraordinary in this coming-of-sexual-identity tale combined with a screwball comedy, a dark psychological thriller (Will her bitch of a psych give up the Harry B? Will our heroine ever relax?), warm family movie, and romantic teaser (ohhhhh, Grayum!). It also contains the artistic contributions of REAL OMG TGs!! Buy this now and rock your world.

My husband & I have very different movie tastes and neither one of us liked this movie much. I found myself bored at times and it seemed really predictable. I knew early in the movie that it was going to involve a long road trip and getting to know each other and then finally becoming closer.
I knew somewhere along the way that the son would learn the truth too...it just seemed expected.

I was ready for a silly movie like, "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" or even "Tootsie". This movie was in a league by itself. Felicity Huffman deserved her Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She was surprisingly wonderful in this movie. This film had heart and I highly recommend it!

Review created: 08/06/06

I am a big Kevin Zegers fan and wanted to watch his performance in this film. I was not disappointed. The acting was excellent by the entire cast. They made me believe that a man could want to be a woman, and I felt the pain the parents went through.
This adult film includes teen sex, gay sex, and graphic male images. It is not a family film. The plot involves characterization of parents who are so one sided that they cannot accept their son's discomfort at being male. I think people have more depth that the two actors portrayed here. This was the only disjointed part of the film.
Kevin Zegers portrays a boy who sells himself to men for money. However, I felt the writing was weak, since he totally accepts this new 'woman' in his life and travels with her without ever really questioning why she is spending so much time and effort on him. His performance was very good and believable, though.
Felicity Huffman was excellent as the 'man' who became a woman. For someone interested in this type of film, it was intriguing.
