This collection of footage featuring the legendary John Coltrane includes rare concert tracks, as well as illuminating interviews with those who were close to him, and many of his frequent collaborators. All of the members of Coltrane's "classic quartet" are present and accounted for, with a 30-minute interview from pianist McCoy Tyner that was conducted in recent years. Talks with drummer Elvin Jones, trumpetist Benny Bailey, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Eddie Marshall, round out a portrait of the great John Coltrane. Performers include Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones, Miles Davis, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. An album of rare photographs is included, and the Miles Davis Quintet performs some of their all-time classics. A vital entry into the Coltrane collection, this documentary sheds light on the life of one of the most powerfully creative and seminal figures jazz has ever seen.
