Album Notes Hot Rize: Tim O'Brien (vocals, mandolin, fiddle); Nick Forster (vocals, bass); Charles Sawtelle (guitar, background vocals); Pete Wernick (banjo, background vocals). Recorded at Colorado Sound Recording, Denver, Colorado. Hot Rize first came to public attention in the '80s as a democratic quartet. Mandolin player Tim O'Brien and banjo man Pete Wernick gained renown as solo artists of high esteem. Despite their subsequent lofty status, Hot Rize's group dynamic happily prevails on 1988's TRADITIONAL TIES. The selections range from original compositions to traditional tunes and bluegrass classics. A relaxed mid-tempo ramble through Flatt & Scruggs's "If I Should Wander Back Tonight" is a highlight. Though each member demonstrates impressive facility, TRADITIONAL TIES never devolves into showboating. Sharp, concise solos abound, but the song is definitely the thing on this album.
