Movie Description
An adaptation of Lillian Hellman's once controversial play, TOYS IN THE ATTIC stars Dean Martin as businessman manqué Julien Berniers. When he returns to his family home in New Orleans with innocent young wife Lily (Yvette Mimieux), his overly solicitous older sisters, Anna (Wendy Hiller) and Carrie (Geraldine Page), hope that he'll be able to lift them out of the genteel poverty in which they abide. Although he's had to fold his Chicago shoe business, Julien radiates affluence, lavishing expensive gifts on everyone in sight. Anna is skeptical about the source of her brother's wealth, and even Carrie, whose feelings for Julien are much more than filial, is doubtful. When Lily's wealthy mother, Albertine (Gene Tierney), comes to visit, accompanied by her chauffer-lover Henry (Charles Lampkin), Lily and Carrie overhear them mention that Julien and former lover Charlotte Warkins (Nan Martin) had swindled Charlotte's husband, Cyrus (Larry Gates), in a land deal. The consequences of this revelation will change the lives of all of the film's characters. George Roy Hill's one foray into the landscape of Southern Gothic was hampered by the muting of the play's themes of homosexuality and incest. Page and Hiller, however, are brilliant in their roles.
