Haynes is a good auto repair guide.

Haynes guides are a great way to see all the oily bits of your vehicle without getting your hands dirty! I like to skim through the auto repair guide for my truck to get a feel for what is going on in advance. Then, when something happens or you want to do some maintenance they can help you form a plan of attack.
These are geared towards the back-yard mechanic and there are some procedures outside the scope of Haynes, that are not represented in the book. These are usually the kinds of things most don't want to tackle at home anyway.
While the books are pretty accurate, you will occasionally come across something poorly explained, or just plain incorrect. I look at auto repair guides like tools. You might be able to get through a repair using only one, but often the more you have the easier it is to get something done and the more you can do. Likewise, it would be a good idea to have more than one repair guide for your vehicle from more than one publisher. It's also a good idea to have the factory service manual, which is often found online for free, and should generally be used as the "tie breaker" when in doubt about a procedure.
If you read the procedures in a few of the books and use a little common sense, you should be able to tackle most of he repairs and maintenance on your vehicle. Good luck and happy motoring!
