Album Notes Personnel: Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone); Selwart Clark, Nathan Goldstein (violin); Julian Barber (viola); Kermit Moore (cello); David Izenzon (bass); Charles Moffet (percussion). Recorded live at Town Hall, New York, New York on December 24, 1962. Personnel: Ornette Coleman (saxophone); David Izenzon (upright bass); Charles Moffett (drums). Right after his stint at Atlantic with the celebrated quartet featuring Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman embarked on a European tour with this trio comprised of the under-recorded arco-prone bassist David Izenzon and drummer Charles Moffett, who specializes in some of the same New Orleans second-line rhythms that characterized one of Ornette's former percussionists, Ed Blackwell. In contrast to abstract toy band qualities of the Atlantic quartet, this is Coleman at his most Bird-like, exploiting an even greater fluency and emotional nuance on his instrument (see "Sadness") Also the string quartet "Dedication to Poets and Writers" represents the first of Coleman's occasional forays in classical composition, sort of like Bartok for beginners.
Editorial Reviews 5 stars out of 5 -- Moffett's nuanced, pan-stylistic approach alternately gave wings and grease to Coleman's solos. Subsequently, Izenzon and Moffett could keep pace with Coleman's constant mood swings on the marathon 'The Ark'....'The Ark' was a groundbreaking long-form performance. Down Beat
