Album Notes
You can't go wrong with this great collection of country hits. It starts out strong with Brooks & Dunn's John Cougar-esque "Only in America" and works its magic all the way through the Dixie Chicks' poignant ballad "Without You," Tammy Cochran's sentimental weepie "Angels in Waiting," and Dwight Yoakam's surprisingly successful reworking of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me."
In an unsurprising reflection of the times, most of the material on offer here is reassuringly down-home in its appeal--there's no sign of the drinking and cheating songs that until a decade ago seemed to be country staples. The closest to any outlaw-like behavior is Keith Urban's "Where the Blacktop Ends," which turns out to be merely about blowing off a little steam after a hectic work week, and when Travis Tritt sings about his three-day beard in the doggedly optimistic "It's a Great Day to Be Alive," you can bet it's not because he's just coming off a bender. Martina McBride's "There You Are" is a cozy little country ballad that's an appropriately down-tempo ending to this collection.
