I paid $179.99, which included 10 HD DVDs, AN HDMI Cable, and Free shipping (7 days delivery!). I have used it alot since I received it (three HD movies and two regular DVDs) The picture quality is outstanding. The most impressive part is the upconverting of regular DVDs. This is the biggest draw since I have a lot of old DVDs and these are probably the ones that I will buy the most. I am not sure I will be buying HD format DVDs until they come down in price or they become much more affordable. If an HD DVD is $25 to $30 and a regular DVD is $9.99 and the picture quality is VERY CLOSE guess which one I will be buying? I have been to the stores many many times and even when I compared my Television purchase a year ago, 1080P or 720P? , it all comes down to the source. I had a very hard time seeing the differences between 1080P and 720P at least not enough to justify spending the extra $400 to $500 for a set (as of last year). The same can be said about HD and regular DVDs. I am not seeing any difference between the two formats or at least not enough to pay the $29.99 (HD) vs $9.99 (DVD).

Standard DVD looks obviously better on HD-A3. 1080i is not a concern as you will get identical video image with de-interlace on your 1080p HDTV. The data transport rate at 1080i is more than needed for reassembling back to 1080p at TV end. The end result is exactly the same for 1080p TV set. Set to file mode (1080i/24) should give you better result if your TV supports it.

I highly recommend using HDMI if you have a HDCP compatible HDTV because there are quality issues if you use component cables.

UOPs (User Operation Prohibition) are enabled, prohibiting the viewer from Fast Forwarding during sections of a DVD that are protected by this universally loathed feature, meaning that you may be FORCED to watch certain content (previews, long introductions) that you have no interest in.

I Updated the firmware to 1.3 (it came from the factory at 1.1, )
and could see a difference immediately brighter and clearer picture and faster load time Internet connection takes about 40 minutes. I have to unplug the player and move it to an Ethernet connection when new firmware updates are released. Firmware upgrades will continue to happen with all HD-DVD players becasue they're continually improving performance and features. For anyone who cannot connect the player to the Internet you can either download an ISO of the firmware from Toshiba's website or have Toshiba send you out an update disc free of charge.

The unit locked up on me once after the firmware update and I had to redo it again (another 40 minutes) also You can't just use the stop button and stop the movie in order to come back and pick up where you left off later. Hitting stop means when you hit play again you start from the beginning of the disc. The upgrade to care of that problem.

If your looking for a great player to get full potential out of your 720p/1080i hdtv then this is the player for you just make sure what your TV can support.

In the end I would recommend this player as a second player for the bedroom. If you have a 1080p, 120 Hz capable TV, I would recommend going with the HD-A35 or the HD-XA2 as they can send 1080p@24Hz and can output unencoded high resolution audio. Not to mention the upscaling for DVD is better.

Thank you for taking the time to read this report I hope it helps you.

NO one gave us a head's up that Blue Ray was going to make Toshiba's HD DVD player obsolete right after we bought it. They unloaded them on the public and we're all a bunch of sucker's........buyer beware.

I bought from him the Toshiba HD-DVD player.
The delivery was late, but the seller was very helpful and he found out. The delay of the delivery was not his mistake, it late because of the customs, but despite this he repaid for me 5 USD. I was able to try the DVD player now, and it works perfectly. I am glad that I bought the DVD player from him, and I recommend the salesman to everybody.

The DVD player did not work. However, the seller was timely in his response. I sent the player off to the manufacturer and received a new one pretty quickly. I am now in the process of transferring the warranty that I had also purchased.

I am patiently awaiting my arrival of my HD-A3 and short of it being DOA ,I have no doubt it will be a GREAT PLAYER for the teenagers room at a ebay price or $39!!!! I did want to comment on the person about ebay purchases being void of warranties. There is a company called SQUARETRADE that offers warranties on ebay electronics both new and used. They have EXCELLENT prices on warranties, many times being BETTER than the original manufacturers warranty!! Check them out...and for the record...TOSHIBA makes some GREAT PRODUCTS for the money!!

GREAT DVD player! HD or otherwise
Review created: 07/08/08
by:

I had just bought a 37" HDTV and just got my HD-DVR when I thought it was time to upgrade my dvd player. I found that BLU-RAY players were still expensive (around $399 still) but I wanted to get a better picture then I got with my current dvd player. Then I found this Toshiba HD-A3 from Dealtree. It was surprisingly inexpensive plus it came with several movies PLUS the shipping on it was thankfully very reasonable! Despite the fact that Toshiba was out of the HD-DVD business, I thought I would get this player to use for a while, awaiting the lowering of the price on the BLU-RAY players. I am so glad I did this. The HD-A3 came packed extremely well. It took me all of ten minutes to hook it all up. Another few minutes to upgrade the firmware and all has been peaches and cream ever since. THANKS DEALTREE!!!!!
If and when the time comes to purchase that BLU-RAY, you can count I'll be checking out DEALTREE FIRST.

  Need to know about Warranties
Review created: 06/23/08
by:

Like for everyone to know that if you purchase a new item from E-Bay that more than likely your warranty is null and void. So be sure to understand if you buy a product like I did that even though the seller won't say it or let you know there is NO warranty covering your item(s).

The New Toshiba HD DVD Player I purchased quit 3 weeks after I bought it, the seller gave a 7 day refund policy but that in no way helped. Spoke with Toshiba, spoke with the seller but neither wanted to do anything about it.
Toshiba products should be covered under a warranty because they warranty workmanship and it matters not what an item was purchased for but that it was an item that was purchased. We generally purchase by brand recognition because of the quality associated with the name. I feel that Toshiba has let the consumer down by placing items on the market that don't stand up to todays standards. In speaking with several people at Toshiba help desk I was told that even if you had been given the item as a gift they now, because of E-Bay and the like, need to verify the purchase and the price of purchase. Retailers often sell closeout item at a reduced price and this too can void your warranty according to Toshiba.
My item was purchased by the seller I bought it from after he had purchased several of the items at a considerable discount at Sears. They traced my player by the serial number and had full records of when Sears received it and when Sears sold it and for how much and to whom.

Why I'm out my money I'll take my player to a local repair place and hope they can fix it cheaply. If not I will have to purchase another one...... NO, it won't be from E-Bay.

I for one will never by Toshiba again.

  HD-A3 HD-DVD Player
Review created: 06/20/08

HD-DVD may be dead but this machines makes "normal" DVDs glow.

Many of the HD-DVD's also come as a "combo" unit and plays both DVD and HD-DVD.

This machine takes my library of discs and makes them stand out on my LCD TV.

The only problem is the delay from Toshiba in getting the updated firmware discs, and the rebate discs.

Seller opened and closed an unpaid dispute claim under false pretense. Item was paid for on same day auction won, but because his shipment did not come in he filed dispute against me as unpaid. He should have contacted me and advised me of the situation then offered a refund or other compensation. Business should be about being professional in all aspects. I purchased from another honest eBayer.

I love my unit, it has never ever let me down and it plays DVD's with little effort. If you do not know what machine to buy, then I can tell you now that it is this one you need!

HD-DVD player great for upconverting regular DVDs.
Review created: 05/08/08
by:

I already had one of these, but wanted a backup after the HD-DVD format was doomed. Even though I will eventually run out of HD-DVD movies, this is a great upconverting DVD player, and the audio is great. I don't see enough difference in the upconverted DVDs (video or audio) to even consider BluRay. I'll wait to see what's around the corner before buying a new DVD player.

As far as functionality it is a great buy for the money. The only issue that I have with the player, is that it seems to be very slow to come on and it takes the door a long time to open as well. Other than that I am very pleased with the purchase and quality that Toshiba consistently turns out!

  Great HD-DVD and DVD upscaling.
Review created: 05/01/08
by:

I purchased the Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player shortly after the end of the HD format war, knowing that the HD-DVD format was soon to be the next BetaMax. The great part of the machine is that it plays regular DVDs and upscales them to HD quality. Unfortunately for some of the older DVDs, the upscaling is not that impressive but for all the ones that have come out in the last 5 years, the upscaling is phenomenal. The machine does take a little while to start up, but if you remember that this particular machine is really computer based running Linux (Busy Box), you quickly realize that this "end of life" platform machine has many other possibilities, it is hackable. For the non-geeks, this really does not matter, what does though is that for the price, you will not find a better deal on a HD player or a DVD upscaling player and that HD-DVDs are really inexpensive right now and that regular DVDs are super easy to find and play just about as well (minus the extra content that no one really cares that much about anyways). I am actually looking for a second machine just like this one soon for hacking reasons, the machine has a built in ethernet connection so that updates are pretty much automatic, this and several other features make the modification possibilities fairly huge.

I looked at several other HD-DVD players and finally decided on this particular one knowing that it is computer and runs on Linux and that most other HD-DVD players use different technology and are not Linux based and therefore not as likely to be modified or hackable as this one. This makes the Toshiba HD-A3 much more versatile and giving it the possibility of a longer life than most other similar machines.

  Cheaper than Blu-Ray
Review created: 04/13/08

Great HD-DVD player, even though they are now obsolete, but the HD-A3 does a good job as a upconverter so that we can watch our rather large collection of 'regular' DVD's on our 1080p TV. I'll wait until there's a little more competion for the Blu-Ray market rather than spend 3-400 bucks for a player.

the proof is in the pudding!!!!! one sweet player!!!
Review created: 04/09/08

i bought this player after the format war was already decided and blu-ray had supposedly won. i'm very happy i bought this player as it does a beautiful job of playing my regular dvds. some dvds that i have tried have not shown as much improvement as others but on some of them it improves them to near hi-def quality. i'm now very happy with this setup of my hdtv, the hd-dvd player and regular dvds. unless blu-ray ever gets their players priced down in the $150 price range i will be quite content to buy whatever hd-dvds i consider worth the extra cost or just buy regular dvds. the only drawback to the player is the boot-up time which is approx. 30 seconds. but if i turn on the player first, then get tv source button set, and then get my dvd out it is usually ready to go. i really think hd-dvd was the way to go go as compared to blu-ray but that was just one persons viewpoint. toshiba made a very nice blue laser player in the hd-a3 and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to get the most from their dvd collection.

  Toshiba HD-A3 Player HD-DVD Player
Review created: 03/26/08
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The item itself is probably alright. Unfortunately, HD DVD players are only good for playing our regular movies, (the old ones), and the 2 HD movies that came with it. We only bought a new DVD player as our other one quit working. The day after we received it is when the industry that sells movies decided to go to Blu Ray. So, it sits in it's box, after watching one of the movies. I really thought that, under the circumstances, the seller would take it back...WRONG. My husband still gets angry over it and I feel like I wasted my money but, I didn't even know there was a battle between the Blue Ray and HD. My husband and I are seniors and never thought about that happening. Owell...we did receive the item and it LOOKS nice anyway. As a buyer AND a seller, I will have to say that Toshiba is a very good quality item, but, as a seller, I would've found a way to make it right to the buyer. It is not the sellers fault that the industry decided to go with Blue Ray and it is DEFINITELY not the buyers fault. As a seller, I aim for GREAT customer service. (Not only on eBay...but ANYWHERE I happen to sell.) A happy customer is a return customer. All I got from this buyer was that I got the item I paid for and I could watch old moves, and the 2 I received. Toshiba would be ashamed.

What a shame that Toshiba lost the format war against Sony. However, great news for me. I got an aweome machine which up-scales normal DVDs to near HD quality, for under $70. What a difference! Now I can wait for Blu-ray to get cheap (or obsolete) while enjoying my player.
