I have enjoyed this purchase from day 1. The picture and sound quality are amazing when connected to an HD TV or Projector. The Movie Theater experiance has finally come home. Some of the titles I would recommend with this machine for Demo Material as well as good movies are the following.
Batman Begins
Corpse Bride
Mission Impossible 3
Serenity

Even if it isn't the format war winner...

If this does not win the format war you still can't lose. It is a tremendous upscaling dvd player which could run as much or more than the price of this unit. Plus you never have to invest a dime into creating your own library while still enjoying high def dvd now. How? By joining netflix or some other video rental service you can enjoy high def dvd's and put your great hi-def set to new use. If nothing else it makes my regular dvd's look sooo much better than my last cheapo upconverting player from toshiba.

  Toshiba HD-A1 Player

When i bought this I thought I was getting a great player but when I tried to play an HD DVD disc it only played the video and not the audio. I called Toshiba and they said I needed a firmware update to make it work.

I did the firmware update, now the DVD player plays nothing, no video or audio. I called Toshiba back and they said they don't guarantee them to play all discs.

You make youir own judgement.

Decent first version HD DVD player

Incredible picture and sound and very easy to use. The only problem I have with it is that it's very slow to start up. It can take well over a minute to start up and load. Otherwise very nice DVD player and if you can pick one up for under $200 like I did then you will be very pleased with your purchase.

the right hd dvd player for me ?

This player is just a perfect match for all the a/v equipment needs I have it intergrated into. It took me a while to decide if I was going to get into another format decision. I'm glad I did this. This hd dvd player have all the outputs my tv and pre amp required to get the best possible picture and sound quaility. It do not bother me that this is a first generation player and is a little on the slow side when it comes to loading a dvd or cd. I'm glad Toshiba overbuilt this dvd player which makes it very versitile. As one can see in the next two generations players they are not as versitile as this one.It came loaded with the latest software so I have not had any compatibility issues. Once the picture and sound comes forth all is well and time to enjoy my purchase. The picture and sound quaility is far above standard dvd and cannot be mistaken for the same. The picture is cleaner and the sound is more smooth and relaxed than standard dvd. I also find myself playing more of my cds as it is really a great cd player too. It performs all the duties it is suppose to ( internet, web sites, updates ). I can not say there is something I dislike because there is so much I like about this hd dvd player. I hope I can enjoy it for a long time to come.

  Beautiful picture but slow.....

Great HD picture, but it takes a long time just for the door to open to load a DVD, and again for the DVD to upload. But when it finally does...WOW what a picture it produces!! I put in the HD DVD Shooter and was absolutely amamzed by the picture quality. It is alot less expensive than other brands so I guess I shouldn't complain about the slowness of the upload/door opening. A very nice HD DVD player for the amount I paid.

I bought it because it was cheap.
The seller advertised that it did not seem to work .
After downloading the manual I read about a possible conflict with The hdmi connection . After playing
with it for a hour or so It seemed to work . I then ordered the missing remote that was suppose to be with the unit.
It was a gamble to buy, and should have had the remote but when all was said and done I have a High Definition
DvD Player for around $105.00 including Shipping.
I did not like that the remote cost more than the player.
I may have not bought the unit if I new the remote was not included.
I kinda got lucky.

I love this Player, a true HD Player with quality. The remote is hard to read for those who need glasses, but does the job. Receiver seems a little slow in doing it's job, but you will enjoy this HD Movies that you watch on this receiver. Well, worth the money!

Make sure you have the most up-to-date firmware; or else the product might not work with your TV. Initially the product would not work with my TV until I updated the firmware; which was not a straightforward as I would've wished. This is now an antiquated technology that unfortunately lost out to the slight advantages of Blu-Ray; but it is a substantial piece of equipment that is actually a Pentium computer disguised as a HD DVD player. You'll appreciate this fact when you lift it and feel the weight of this unit compared to other DVD players.

Toshiba HD-A1 Player. Works great, slow load time
Review created: 08/14/09
by:

a week agot I recieved the Toshiba HD-A1 player, and so far it has worked great, right when I got it and hooked it up via the internet the player prompted me for the latest firmware update. It plays everything fine, the only thing that I don't like is the load time, it can take up to a minute to load a dvd, but that is only fair since this is the first model for the HD DVD players, and that it is pretty much a computer. Overall it's a pretty good product.

The item worked as promised, but they charged for insurance when UPS provides free insurance coverage for the first $100 and they REFUSED to refund the fee they charged. ASK how they will ship first before you pay for something you get for free. Their email responces showed a compleat lack of understanding also.

  Nice product - But...
Review created: 03/08/08
by:

I just bought a Toshiba HD-A1 player, days before Toshiba announced it was going to exit the HD-DVD market altogether, since it could not compete with BluRay. Oh well. Nevertheless, the player plays normal DVDs nicely with upconversion to HD, and has 5.1 component outputs that work with my older receiver. It plays DVD-R and other recordable media, which is nice, but doesn't play divx/xvid/wmv, so you have to convert everything to original DVD format. Also, don't be fooled by the USB ports on th front panel, or the Ethernet port on the back - they are pretty much useless for doing anything interesting like playing mp3s off a memory stick or from a LAN share. But all things considered, it seems to be a good value for what I paid for it. If you look at it as only a DVD player with upconversion, you'll be satisfied. If you're looking for more, you may want to consider a Media Center PC.

Review created: 01/03/08

Reviews are right when they speak about how slow the the HD DVD discs load. But it is not that bad, especially with the firmware update. All other controls including menu browsing, chapter skipping and fast forwarding/rewinding seem to be fine as in terms of speed. The only thing you have to wait for is the loading. In terms of picture quality, prestine! Absolutely gorgeous HD images, and the upconverting quality is top notch also!

  A Great Product
Review created: 01/03/08

This is a Great HD DVD Player. It make your old DVD even look better with its upwards conversion. It was easy to install, and work will with my AVR with an HDMI/Optical hookup.

The only negitive I have found is that it is a little slow loading, but I do not find this a problem.

do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is
the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete
the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This
is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3
different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with
nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster
online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would
regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use
them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 30 day
free trial and it never cost me a penny and I received credit for it the
same day). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you.
After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-13 people
(depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link
(just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your
referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I
chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these
companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all
the referrals. All you have to do is post it ! They use us as
advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes
toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as
Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you
want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own

Review created: 10/18/07(updated 10/20/07)

Great price, Great picture, but the dvd player is so slow to load and is slow to respond to almost all your commands with the remote. If you can deal with the slow speed you will love the picture and sound. For its slow speed I rate it average but if I was rating on picture I would rate excellent!
