Great for duplicating old VHS home videos

This unit provided a simple, easy and fast way to transferring my old VHS home videos to DVD format. Don't buy it to transfer your commercial VHS movies to DVD, however. It won't work. It does do a great job of capturing off the air programs I want to keep on DVD. The playback "up-converting" is a little overstated since you can't create more data than is already on an existing DVD but the playback images are very sharp and true.

This was my first DVD/VCR combo recorder purchase and it was an "open box" item. It's light and it's attractive and fits well with my other audio video units. I thought I had researched all I needed to know but that wasn't the case. Overall, the unit does what it's supposed to do and recording broadcast is easy on either DVD or VCR. I haven't tried recording from one to the other yet (dubbing).
What I don't like is that it doesn't have its own tuner which, of course, I knew before I bought it. I figured it wouldn't be a problem but, it would be much better if it did. One other feature I use (that most people don't) is "Closed Caption". Even though it has the CC feature for normal DVD Video, so far it doesn't seem possible to "record" that feature on a DVD-RW or +RW. It's funny that the VCR does but the DVD doesn't. I really don't like that but, like I said, most people probably wouldn't use that feature on record anyway. Also, the recorded video seems to be on the darker side than the original broadcast. Maybe a little twiking is needed.
I mainly bought it because I needed a new VCR but figured having a DVD that I could reuse the disc over and over had to be better than a VCR tape, not to mention better quality. I thought the price was good considering it was under $100 including shipping. Except for the CC feature, I think it's a decent unit for the price. I guess you get what you pay for. This was our first purchase of a DVD/VCR recorder and I am not one to spend any more than I have to on electronics (or anything else), so I researched various recorders and their prices fairly extensively. I decided on this product and have been very pleased with my choice - both for features and value. I am not overly savvy with electronics, so I did have to read the manual and work at it a bit, but I was able to figure out how to dub my large VCR collection (purchased movies and self-recorded tapes) onto DVD and use one-touch and timed recording to record shows & movies from our satellite-connected TV. The picture and sound quality on the dubbed and recorded DVDs is top-notch, as is the quality of VCRs and DVDs played on the unit. I finalized the DVDs I dubbed/recorded and had no trouble at all playing them on a DVD player and a portable DVD player, all 3 of different brands. I definitely recommend this product.

I resesarched every type of dvd/vcr recording combo made before buying this model. So far, it's recorded everything I've thrown at it even some newer vcr tapes that my sony wont. You have to spend a few minutes reading the owner's manuel but it's really not that difficult to understand. It was harder figuring out all the connection between my home theatre,tv,and digital tv box than figuring out how to record. I'd recommend this product to anyone based on my 25 plus years of electronics/it experience. I've never got anything but quality products with Toshiba! How can you go wrong with getting a "new" store display model that retailed for $300plus for $100?!!! I can live with a box that didn't look brand new and a player/recorder that only had two minor surface scratches on it! Great product for a really great price!

Works perfectly copying VHS tapes to DVDs or copying directly from a camcorder to DVDs. The copying proces is very simple to operate. Creating DVD titles is a bit more work. One of the best, if not the best, DVD recorder.

This item is a great item. I bought it a few weeks ago. It is a DVD/VCR Recorder combo and it is worth the price. It is very easy to use. You can record from VCR to DVD or vice versa. You can also record from your TV to DVD or VCR. It also has plenty of other features. I definetly recommend.

This recorder offers excellent reproductions of recorded TV programs.It also does the same for dubbing from VHS to DVD.I feel that the instruction manual could have been more simplified. It takes a while to assimilate the content. All in all this is a very good product

I have not used all the functions yet. I have burned beautiful copies to dvd with no noticable quality difference between original and copy!I like that you can space forward and back on a dvd which I couldn't do with my old Magnavox.Finalizing a disc has been much faster than stated even for one with little data.It would be nice if you could send vhs audio to home theater like the dvd,but that's not a big deal.I didn't see the major improvement that some people said from upconverting,but my TV is only 780 it may be more noticable on 1080 sets.I had a small Toshiba TV that lasted many years with no problem {until stolen}probably still works.Toshiba is looking like a quality brand to me!

If you have a bunch of older DVDs or VCR tapes you don't want to discard and are upgrading to a 1080dpi TV, then a good combo player should be on your list. After looking at Gods and Generals on this upscaling player, I was blown away. With HDMI, this player produces an amazing picture. Be advised, upscaling only works on the DVDs, not tapes. So if you want the best quality off your tapes, use the dubbing feature to easily transfer to DVDs. And a tip, use the best quality DVDs (see http://www.digitalfaq.com/medi

I decided to purchase this model primarily from reading these reviews, and i must say, I am in no way disappointed in it's functioning. The copies I have made from my collection of videos has been in no way compromised in the quality of the picture playback copied to DVD. The machine is smooth/ quiet.
I don't do well with reading directions, so there is probably so much more this machine can do. However, I'm satisfied with just the knowledge I found easy to attain, just reading directions on Dubbing.

I liked the dvd player, I bought it for my grandparents but because it didnt have a year warrenty so I got her a differnet one and kept this one. I have been very happy with this product.

I have alot of old home movies on VHS that I do not want to part with. I wanted a way to copy them over to DVD. This works great! I have not learned how to do all the editing yet but copying is one touch EASY!!!

This is my FIRST dvd player. I refused to buy one until I could get the one with the VCR unit as well. I'm over 50, and I have become my mother with new technology, scared of the unknown. This unit made it so easy for me to learn not only how to hook it up, but also how to watch a DVD! I haven't tried recording yet since I don't have any DVD's to record on (it came that fast). But I suggest this to anyone who's been holding out on joining the new recording and watching forum.

I didn't read the listing as well as I thought and when I got the item I discovered that it did not have an internal tuner, the seller was willing to take it back.

Product so far works like a new unit. It was packed adquately. All components wraped in plastic bags with no obvious damage. The instruction manual is like a novel but we are getting more confortable with each use. Tobshiba has a good reputation and having spoken with customer am impressed with there patients and equipment knowledge.

The DVD upconverting to 1080P and the HDMI connect to the Samsung 610 works well. The VCR is three RCA Jacks. DVD performance excellent but not HD 1920x1080. VCR performance varies greatly with the tape. Some are excellent, some Ok and some poor. Depends when made. Better performance too from DVD's digitalized for HD. The DVD door open was inconsistent and found to have food remanants stuck to the underside of the door. After cleaning, works well. No recording - only playback. Good value for intended use.

This DVD-VCR combo recorder works very well. Programming is easy and the dubbing is very simple and direct.I use it almost every day for playback and recording.This unit has no built in tuner,but in my case I did not require one because I am on cable,and I feed thru my 5.1 amplifier. Only one minor complaint,my room is dim and the control buttons are difficult to make out because they are black.The seller sent the unit as advertised and promptly I received it. I highly recommed this unit I have also a DR-410 recorder and it functions just as well.

This player had problems from day one. The DVD player struggled to open and close and within 30 days it quite working all together. I have not been happy with this player and I would not recommed it to anyone.

My new Toshiba DVD RecoederThe unit performs exactly as I wished. I had not expected to be able to copy VHS tapes directly to DVD but can do so easily. The only problem was the absence of a proper Owner's Manual which I had to purchase. I initially decided to buy it because I got a DVD recorder for nearly the price of a player. The vendor's quick response was a bonus.
