What's Up and Down about the DVD/VCR Combo

The DVR-4X DVD/VCR combo is an interesting product, but has limitations to consider, if you wish to use this to convert your VCR personal movies to DVD (and which is why I bought this device). My first recommendation, if you are using this for the same reason, is to research all the products available to you before buying and choose something that uses DVD+RW, rather than the minus RW. While this product works, it's based on an older type of conversion, thus when you do convert VCR to DVD, you have to buy DVD minus RW cds, which is an older format, which does not allow you to put or convert files into anything like youtube, your website or other websites to share the movie files. It will not play through Windows Media Player, either. Also, if you wish to convert the files to compressed or "mpeg" styled formats, you cannot. It will play in the player, however, it's format is also more "old school" in that it doesn't give you ample ways to format the video, and it doesn't automatically convert. You have to turn on the VCR tape and have it play through it's duration, thus you have to monitor it. I can say, though, if you're using this as just a way to get the files to DVD, it works. I think, though, that there must be more up to date products. I was a bit frustrated that I had to sit in front of to decide when the dvd needed to stop recording. The manual, too, while it's specific in its format, is limited in how user-friendly it is. I admit that I didn't dive too deeply into the DVD for cd recording or other features, knowing that I cannot convert the dvd movie files into any format. The other limiting feature is that it will let you play it in your regular dvd player, but there's the hook in this device that unless you tell it appropriately, it will only play in the Toshiba DVD! I also didn't like the chapter set up that it makes, and the menus to label the dvd and how it records...you have to finalize it in a certain way or you will only be able to view your dvd in that recorder. Again, if you're looking for something quick, it works. However, there are other dvd recorder/vcr combos that can convert much faster (without having to play the content) and the limited conversion features. I didn't explore the cd playing, but did play regular movies in this DVD recorder, which was fine, but again, your current dvd player may have more up to date and have better resolution.
