Toshiba D-R400 DVD Recorder

THIS IS A VERY VERSATLE UNIT.LOTS OF BELLS AND WHISTLES & WAS A GREAT BUY AT THE PRICE.I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE LOOKING FOR A GOOD DVD PLAYER/RECORDER TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT THIS UNIT.

The price was very good for this item. Once i got the item, the features and performance blew me away. It's one thing to read the specs but to see this baby in action is just awesome. For anyone who doesn't want to spend crazy bucks for a blue ray player, this is the way to go! My unit plays back dvds at 1080p and has hdmi out for connection directly to a hi def tv. It also records quality dvds directly from satelite and other sources. This unit also features progressive scan. I am well pleased with this purchase!

I have used this item before, at my old job. Over there, we needed to make about 4 DVDs a day from a live recording, thru a Composite connection. It worked flawless. Very easy to use. I never had to open the manual. Just record, stop, finalize - and the disc is ready.
Now I bought one for myself, in order to make DVD outputs from Final Cut Pro to give to my clients for review. I have tried other recorders prior to choosing this model, and I still think this was the best choice for me. You can't beat the price, and it does everything any other recorder does.
Two complaints I have about it:
1. It does take a bit too long sometimes to finalize a disk, longer than different recorders would take (the Panasonic EZ28 for example). But that, compared to being at least 3 times cheaper, is not really a disadvantage.
2. It will not allow firewire connection in from a computer, which would be nice. You can use the firewire port to connect to a camera and record video that way, but you cannot output from a computer. There are actually very few recorders on the market that will do that, so this is not a complaint against the recorder itself necessarily, but against most DVD recorders. (It has to do with the fact that both the recorder and the computer attempt to act as the master on the firewire connection)
Overall, this is a great product for the money (especially if you buy it refurbished).

I received this item on 12/16/08, opened it, plugged it in and the DVD door will not open or close so it was sent broke and I have not been able to use it. I have emailed the seller and I have not received a response.

I initially bought this recorder to replace an older DVD recorder/hard drive I had purchased previously that failed to operate longer than 5 months past it's purchase date. I had read plenty of reviews on several DVD recorders, but finally decided on this one after much internal debate. When i recieved the recorder, i was pleasantly surprised at how responsive the unit was (to remote control commands) in comparison to other units i have owned. Power up was relatively brief, recording was instantaneous and very easy to initiate with little knowledge of how to operate the device. Playback of a recorded DVD in LP mode is close to the original DVD quality, which impressed me quite a bit. There are few options available aside from the necessities, which makes this an excellent recorder for a not-so-tech savvy joe shmoe. I'm very pleased with the unit and would replace it with an identical unit if (ever) necessary.

I was dissapointed that this was a refurbished unit and not brand new.
Ithought it would have a better warranty. It might have been cheaper than new prices, but, not the bargain I was led to believe.

The editing does not work as well as my old ILO DVD recorder and I thougtht being a Toshiba it would be better. NOT!

Excellent product, integrated easily with home theater system. Set up menu is a breeze. Recording set up is is very simple. Only complaint is disc tray opens too slowly.

A little bit bulky, but perfect in terms of available functionalities. I would recommend it for sure!

Item was what I wanted. I needed to be able to record pTV programs which it does nicely. Clarity of the picture is good and its easy to operate.

For the price I paid for this DVD recorder, performs extremely well with minimal aggravation. User friendly and most situations are covered in the documentation. Easy to set up with the cable box and records beautifully. Highly recommend.

This is a very nice dvd recorder, simple to operate and you get good quality dvd's.

I'm satisfied with the recorder.

So far, nothing to dislike. Two very comprehensive manuals, although printed in VERY small print make them hard to read, but I'm an old guy so maybe it's just me. The instructions for set-up and menu operation are easy to follow. All in all I"m very happy with the product, including the price.

This item performs as it was described. It was easy to set up and start using. I am quite pleased with the performance. It did have some feedback at higher volumes on the audio using the enclosed cables. I upgraded to RCA high performance audio cables and that took care of the problem and video and sound quality are excellent.

The unit is great after I repaired it. This was supposed to be a refurbished unit. When I recieved it the unit would not even accept a DVD. Luckily I am an Electronic Engineer and was able to figure how to get it open and how to repair it to make it work.
I contacted the seller and they told me that they are not the company that
repairs them, they just sell them. The said they would send me a new one after I sent this one back.
I didn't want to wait that long since it was a christmas present. Bad service, bad repair people.

Then unit is very attractive, fairly small and lightweight. The price was very good and I, recieved it within a couple of days , It works very well and has a few unexpected features. Very pleased with this purchase.

When all goes well with a transaction, of course everyone is happy. In this case there was a problem; likely shipping damage. The return was handled well and replaced promptly. That's when you know you're dealing with good people.

I got a good price, but had a couple issues arose. First, when I opened it, I learned for the first time that it was refurbished. That was not published in the seller's eBay description. The second thing is that I had to return the remote. That was very easy. I contacted the seller who immediately sent a fax to the company. I was contacted to confirm the issue was the remote and a new one was sent that day. Since then, the dvd play and recorder work just fine.

Both the seller and the company were great in dealing with replacing the remote. Good communication.

The recorder can only record the DVD-R format, not the DVD+R format.It loads pretty slow, although there is no problem in playing. Also, it does not have the connection for 5.1 theater system.

Does not have a built in coax cable input... only for RCA cables. I had to go to a Radio Shack and purchase a separate adapter!

Quick response and tracking received the item as promised. Needed a new DVD recorder. Good features and ease of use.

UNIT WORKED BARELY 2 WEEKS BEFORE TOTAL FAILURE. SELLER IS REQUIRING ME TO GO THRU MANUFACTURER FOR WARRANTY. DO NOT BUY THESE POORLY REPAIRED JUNK. IT WORKED VERY SLOWLY UNTIL TOTAL FAILURE.

I bought this piece of crap Jan 2nd, tried for 2 weeks to get it working and used every dvd type immanigable. Then returned it thru the proper channels, also paying the shipping costs, at this point I'm out about $100 and have no DVR, working or not. This has been my worst internet purchase and if I ever get this resolved I would never use this ebayer or buy another refurbished item again.

I bought this item to record the super bowl and when I received it, it would not even open! It does NOT work and I am still waiting for a way to return it.
