While the 12-CD box set released by British A&M may actually have a better shot at that title, this four-disc, 67-track box is geared towards fans rather than obsessives. FROM THE TOP encompasses the Carpenters' first single, 1969's "Ticket To Ride," the final tracks recorded before Karen Carpenter's 1982 death, and the many singles, significant album tracks, demos, live tracks, previously unissued recordings, and radio interviews in between. The collection even includes such wonderful curiosities as the few jingles Karen and Richard recorded for various companies. All Carpenters fans will treasure FROM THE TOP. The set comes with a nicely designed 36-page book that includes original liner notes and previously unpublished photos.
Editorial Reviews 3 Stars - Good - ..There's an alarming beauty to the early recordings...The Carpenters are pretty hard to match in the mellow, emotion-wracked world of heartache.. Q (03/01/1992)
..[proves that] the Carpenters made some of the classiest pop music of the '70s...Karen had pure tones and an effortless, conversational style.. Musician (02/01/1992)
