Album Notes
Although he chalked up 16 number one singles in his career, including six in a row in the late '70s following his appearance in the film URBAN COWBOY, Mickey Gilley still remains the second most famous musician in his family, the top honor belonging to his cousin Jerry Lee Lewis. That heartbreak alone could provide enough material for a career of great honky tonk, and while his cousin had the rock-&-roll chops, Gilley had it all over the Killer when it came to tears in beers.
TOO GOOD TO STOP collects twenty-six tracks of Gilley's finest on one disc, making it the most comprehensive Gilley best-of available. The set includes a number of Gilley's early '70s gems such as "Overnight Sensation" and "Honky Tonk Memories." His ease with soul music is well represented here by his takes on Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me" and the Miracles "You Really Got a Hold On Me," among others. The disc's one glaring omission: "The Power of Positive Drinkin'," a barrelhouse corker included on the earlier TEN YEARS OF HITS. That misstep aside, TOO GOOD TO STOP, is simply too good to pass up.
