It works straight out of the box, and it is the nicest interface around (award-winning I believe). The only two drawbacks I noted. The first is, if the location you have is off a road, it will not find a route. So, just set your destination at the nearest road. This can be a drag in new developments where the roads aren't on the maps yet. The second issue is with Geocaching (the game of finding hidden stuff with just the longitude and latitude - check out geocaching.com). You can get the coordinates in, but once again, off the road, it really doesn't have a path and it's hard to see where you are. We manage to get it to work, though. This is really a device for DRIVERS, not hikers or geocachers. I have a buddy with an older model, and the software is about the same, but his is 3x thicker. I have used the Blue Tooth features with my phone to check traffic, and I didn't think it was worth the monthly fees (especially since it could never find a faster route around the traffic -- maybe in LA it can). I've heard that this model is not available directly from the manufacturer, and it's our gain. This item fits nicely in your pocket for city cruising on foot and bus. My family and I have also done mystery dining by picking restaurants in it's database near us and driving to them. Very fun! I've tried to setup the fancy GPS's with topo maps for the hard core hikers, and it sucked to get the thing loaded right. A big learning curve. Not the Tomtom. Easy, and it gets you there. Go buy one and spend under $475 incl tax and shipping! Review ID: 10000000001994865 Was this review helpful? I live in California and was traveling from the central valley to the bay area. I actually questioned Tom Tom around the Stockton area of my trip and decided to take my way, you guessed it I had to turn around due to the fact I was going the wrong way, wrong highway. Tom Tom got me to my destination RIGHT ON THE SPOT!!!! I would recommend Tom Tom to anyone, in fact I have, but remember that after using it you'll never be able to go back to a map or Mapquest. Thank you, Kris Thompson Review ID: 10000000002717089 Was this review helpful? Report this review Sort by: Reviews 32 of 32 people found this review helpful. I purchased the Tomtom ONE GPS system for my mom, who is very much technologically challenged. After the initial setup which took a few minutes, I played around with the GPS and figured out basic usage. It only took a few moments to explain the basic features to her, and she was on her own. This is a great little gadget- if my mom is happy with it (which she is), then this is a good buy. I paid $350 on ebay but then saw the same model at Target a week later for only $300. Oh, well, it's still a great GPS. Review ID: 10000000003100247 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 10/05/07(updated 01/21/08) by: 13 of 19 people found this review helpful. I bought a Garmin gps and loved it and my brother and father have a garmin and a Tomtom. They say they like both for diff. reasons. So I decided to get one for my husband. That was a mistake. I either got a bad tomtom or something. The tomtom does not give accurate directions. My tomtom was off 200 meters to 1 mile off every time. It could not even locate alot of diff. addresses I would put in. Ex. I would try to find a Walmart it would say error. Same for a grocery store. I also checked a new one out at Staples and it had the same accuracy, it showed my home wrong by 200 meters too. I would not buy another one or recommend to someone else. The quality and accuracy of the Garmin is much, much better. Review ID: 10000000004512724 Was this review helpful? However, I have found some issues with it. I purchased it and it was a refurbed unit. I was not told what was fixed on it, however, I am finding some problems with the unit. For starters it locks up on occassion and goes through a number of restarts before it fixes itself. Also, I have some issues getting routes from one place to another, particularly when I go from one location to a favorite. On the positive note I love many aspects of the unit to include the searching for points of interest as well as the ability to add searching for Dunkin Donut shops. Has become a life saver. I would recommend this unit for purchase but I would like to know more about the issues I am having. Review ID: 10000000004539033 Was this review helpful? After receiving and using product, within 3 days I realized that there some problem with the inbuilt software I had immediately written a mail asking for return of the same. Even after doing follow-up I did not receive any reply from the seller. Now I am left with a faulty product and my money is wasted I will avoid byuing anything from the seller and even using e-Bay in future Thanks, Amol Review ID: 10000000004341833 Was this review helpful? After Googling I found others with the same problem. I read where one guy has gone through 3 of them. There is a known problem with these where the battery will discharge completely and never be able to be reset or be recharged. TomTom does not offer an warranty or service even if you have the original owners receipt that shows it's less than a year old! If you HAVE to buy one, buy it from a local store where you can easily return it when it fails. Review ID: 10000000003506107 Was this review helpful? I took it out of the box as I was sitting shot gun and I literally had it programmed to take us to Heartbreak Hotel in a matter of 5 minutes. VERY easy to use and the directions were perfect. We used it to navigate the whole city and it really was VERY easy to use, and we were very happy to have it being 3 women on a road trip. I would sometime like to try the realtime traffic however I have Sprint and Tom Tom does not partner with them. Other than that I would reccomend this to everyone! I like the options on the TomTom One and the package of accessories that came with the item. The problem was the unit didn't work. The device was a refurb and did not function correctly. It would not find or connect to any satellites. The device would also auto power itself off every two to three min. I had to call the manufacturer and spend over an hour trying to fix it before sending it back to them at my cost and wait till they looked at it and said (yes it's broken) and send me another one. I did get another unit about 10 days later and that unit seems to be working fine. I guess thats the chance you take when not buying new at a retail store nearby. From what I can tell, they are 2 years behind so if the street is new it won't show. Other than that, I like the product a lot. It has lead me in and out of streets where I am sure that I would have taken the long way around. No reason to stop and look at maps any more! Plenty of advanced notice when a turn is approaching. Easy to program and it remembers destinations in its favorites files. great computer interfacing! Review ID: 10000000003413136 Was this review helpful? The TomTom One was the first GPS unit I had ever seen up close let alone used. It took me all OF about 3 minutes to set my start and final destination points and there was no need for instructions. It was that simple. The readout was bright and clear and could easily be viewed by both driver and passenger. There were no issues with viewing angles at all. The female voice calling out directions was very pleasant and gave plenty of time to maneuver in traffic. The directions were spot on whether on the interstate or around town. Missed or wrong turns are a thing of the past. The TT One puts you back on track immediately. We had some fun trying to trip her up but it can't be done. I only used the basic features as I literally got it hours before leaving town. I'm sure there are better units out there in regard to features and information made available to the driver but the TomTom One is a great entry level GPS that does much more than you would expect for the money. This unit uses a memory card to store your maps which can be problematic if you lose or damage the card. If this is a concern, you can spend a little more and get a unit with built in maps so that you don't have to rely on a memory card. The bottom line is that any good GPS unit is a stress reliever when it comes to navigating unfamiliar roads whether you're travelling accross the country or in a neighboring town. The confidence a GPS provides is priceless if you ask me. I can't say this is the best unit on the market but it has to be one of the best entry level units for sure. You will not regret buying it. I bought it because a friend had on that we used on a trip. I was really fascinated with the 3D feature. I have GPS on a Chrysler van but not a touch screen. You will enjoy. Now I have the confidence I can find a place, no matter how complicated it is. I do wish, however, that I'd gotten a GPS that says the name of the street or highway onto which you are turning. This one says, "Left turn in one-quarter mile." Then, at the turn, it says, "Turn left." It works but I'd feel even better if it said, "Turn left onto such-and-such street." The graphics are very clear, easy to read. The suction device that came with it to attach it to the dash board or window is no good. It falls off. I'm looking for one that's got a longer arm and that will stay put. The voice of the "operator" is pleasant and easy to understand and you have a choice of several voices. All in all, for less than $200, this is a great GPS. Review ID: 10000000004812694 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 02/05/07 by: 7 of 8 people found this review helpful. One of the cheapest GPS units you can buy and also one of the best. Comes with everything you would need as for features and also includes options such as Bluetooth and connection to the TOMTOM network of features. With a subscription you can receive live traffic reports, download new voices and a whole bunch of features that are helpful. Overall, it has useful features and is quite thorough in my opinion. There are several options of re-routing, and several ways to find your destination. Also, points of interest was quite extensive. The only problem I have with this unit is typing in the address. I have fingers that are small enough to hit the button I want. But a friend of mine has self-described "sausage fingers" and had trouble hitting the exact letter desired. If you have fat fingers, consider getting the wide screen version for a bigger display. Rated first in best value purchase by Consumer Reports and ranked somewhere in the teens among all GPS units tested, out of more than 20 or so. Review ID: 10000000002890342 Was this review helpful? I tried this unit ,thought I was upgrading from my Garmin C330 , and the only thing I like better about this unit from my C330 is that is lockes on to satellites better , because of the new SiRF technology though.Got a Garmin C530 with SiRF technology and it blows the Tomtom away. As a professional truck driver I have to agree with the previous statements. Before I got Tom Tom I would turn around or get lost at least once per trip. Now that I have the unit I've yet to get lost and never have a problem finding alternate routes should I need one. There are a few draw backs. First, if you're a professional driver like myself, there are no low bridge warnings nor truck certified routes. Not too shaby as a guide line to get most of the way there though. Second, as previously stated some streets are not on the unit so getting there maybe difficult at times. Overall, it continues to be one of the greatest purchases I've made for myself and my truck. I bought my Tomtom one on Ebay about 2 months ago and let me tell you I was really surprised when I opened the box turned it on and BAM it was fixed on my exact location. It even gave me my Latitude and Longitude. It is supper easy to use. I did not even have to look at the instruction cd at all. Plus when you first start it up it gives you step by step instructions. There is also a built in compass to let you know what direction you are going in. If you miss a turn or go the wrong way in a matter of seconds it figures oout a different route for you to take. Even if you do not put in a destination it shows you were you are including street names. All in all if you want a GPS to get you were you got to go this is it for the right price. There are more expensive ones but I did not need all the extras. I just needed something to get me where I have to go without having to stop and get directions or having to look at a piece of paper every 5 seconds. Plus my wife loves it also. The best thing to is there is no subscription fee or anything. You buy it turn it on and you are on your way. For the price you can't go wrong. Review ID: 10000000003415388 Was this review helpful? I actually bought the TomTom on an Ebay whim, bidding with out researching, etc...I only knew I wanted one of these directional devices for my husband. However, we could not be more pleased. It is easy to use (did not even need to read the directions to start using this), simple to understand, gives great directions, easily changes route when needed, I love it. My husband wanted a GPS device for his birthday this year, and I thought "Great, another gadget we don't need." I got him a refurbished TomTom One because it was reasonably priced and the reviews were pretty good. When it came he was so excited he looked like a kid on Christmas morning! Right out of the box it picked up a signal, we typed in our address and other info. Of course we had to take a drive to try it out....we looked up a bunch of neighborhood places just to hear the directions. Amazing! It has everything: restaurants, stores, pharmacies, schools. We took it on vacation this summer. The unit makes it so easy to find attractions and dining. This year I could relax and just enjoy the scenery instead of studying a local map while my husband drove. My husband travels a lot for work so he takes "Bonnie" (as we call it because of the voice we chose) with him. His bosses love it so much they are considering getting a couple of units for their trucks. This unit isn't without it's flaws. It does steer you it odd directions sometimes and it doesn't have newly constructed roads or buildings, but considering all the info it does have, it is fantastic. If you want a mid-price range GPS, this is the one!! Review ID: 10000000004368149 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 04/08/07 by: 5 of 5 people found this review helpful. I bought the Tom Tom because we were moving to a new area of the country. I love this thing!! It works great for getting me to where I need to go. I've since taken it on several business trips and like the fact that I can find my way without reading maps while driving. It's easy to set up and operate. The only drawback that I have with this purchase on E-bay, is that the special promo was out of date so could not be used. But that wasn't the fault of the manufacturer. Great product, I've recommended Tom Tom to several friends. Review ID: 10000000003029958 Was this review helpful? Report this review 5 of 5 people found this review helpful.
