Tomtom ONE GPS Receiver

I love this gizmo! It gets me there and it is a snap to use. It works straight out of the box, and it is the nicest interface around (award-winning I believe).

The only two drawbacks I noted. The first is, if the location you have is off a road, it will not find a route. So, just set your destination at the nearest road. This can be a drag in new developments where the roads aren't on the maps yet.

The second issue is with Geocaching (the game of finding hidden stuff with just the longitude and latitude - check out geocaching.com). You can get the coordinates in, but once again, off the road, it really doesn't have a path and it's hard to see where you are. We manage to get it to work, though.

This is really a device for DRIVERS, not hikers or geocachers. I have a buddy with an older model, and the software is about the same, but his is 3x thicker. I have used the Blue Tooth features with my phone to check traffic, and I didn't think it was worth the monthly fees (especially since it could never find a faster route around the traffic -- maybe in LA it can).

I've heard that this model is not available directly from the manufacturer, and it's our gain. This item fits nicely in your pocket for city cruising on foot and bus. My family and I have also done mystery dining by picking restaurants in it's database near us and driving to them. Very fun!

I've tried to setup the fancy GPS's with topo maps for the hard core hikers, and it sucked to get the thing loaded right. A big learning curve. Not the Tomtom. Easy, and it gets you there. Go buy one and spend under $475 incl tax and shipping!

TomTom has discontinued this GPS, cheapest TomTom now is the One XL, so beware of the re-furbished units being sold at low cost on Ebay, i just bought one in june 0f 2008.
1] the battery in mine will hold a charge for about 1 and a half hour
2] the software is ver.6.5 which is not up to date, they will sell you the up-grade ver.7.3 for $59 dollars and the card that comes with your TomTom is outdated from 2006 so the discount upgrade is invalid.
3] my power cord never worked and I went to Walmart to get another as Circuit City and Best Buy have one for $30 dollars, Radio Shack was $30 dollars also
4] when out in the country, the roads are off or unknown, sometimes it has the road in memory but i'd have to turn in the woods to follow the GPS.
5] These units were re-called due to a flood of compaints from buyer that had the screen go white and making the GPS usless, a simple fix on the board solved the issue, so there is the 3rd for ya, most are re-furbised units, labeled on box.
Am I being to pickey? I don't think so because brand new out of the box should not include all the above dissapointments that TomTom has offered the buyers/dealers on Ebay, as this model is no longer offered in the big box stores. Get yourself another model with free updates ....not buy updates that might not even fit on the tiny memory card that comes with TomTom one, i'm dissappointed and TomTom has a flood of complaints on this model, just Google this model if you need more info.

The first look at Tomtom in my friends car had me worried, how can such a small and simple looking piece of equipment get me from Florida to North Carolina in one piece? A few hours later and I was convinced I needed one. After my purchase on eBay and using it for a few days here's what I have to say.

The Tomtom at first glance is a simple screen with a power button, however after quickly powering up, the Tomtom is an easy to use advanced piece of technology. After inputing the address the Tomtom brought me to my destination even after stepping off on an unmarked road, the Tomtom stayed diligent and sought me through to the end of my journey.

After a return trip during the night, I activated the Night Colors feature which made the screen much less glaring during the darkness. Adding favorite locations/destinations is easy and is only a few button clicks. The Tomtom comes pre-loaded with voices in all different languages with different accents, and a quick visit to the Tomtom website will allow you to download more voices.

A slight negative to this product is that the map updates must be paid for, however the cost is low, and the updates can be easily installed from your computer using the included USB cable. Tomtom also has revolutionized the GPS industry with their route sharing and traffic features. Other Tomtom users can update their individual unit on road closures and these notes can be shared with other Tomtom users. Using your mobile phone you can find out where the traffic jams are and Tomtom can route you around them.

Overall the Tomtom is an easy, inexpensive, and efficient way to reach your destination - I would highly recommend this product to even those who don't get lost (who could use it for it's above features) and those who don't get lost; the technologically advanced and the technologically challenged. Tomtom really is the smartest choice in personal navigation.

This is a Fantastic Product. I used this now called "Tammy Tom Tom" as the Tammy voice I selected from the six voices available. Yes this GPS is as simple as touching the screen to navigate or retrieve important informations simply by touching the screen by putting an address and city and state and off you go with a direction voice for travel, Thats right like a buddy keeping you from getting lost. I have not even read the instructions as of yet and this Tammy Tom Tom was better then reading a road map by far.. I look forward to using this product again and with my home address entered I always get home without getting lost..fantastic product and a great way to not get lost A very affordable price which I will recover by keeping on the right roads! If I need a women to "tell me where to go" Tammy Tom Tom is just fine with me...LOL

I borrowed my friends gps to go to MD which is 13 hrs away from me. The tomtom told me exactly which way to go, where the gas stations where, to the mileage and feet. I soooo had to buy me one since I have never traveled but 3 hours but now I feel safe to travel ANYWHERE because I have TomTom. I would def. recommend this product to anyone!!!! Thanks!!!

I bought this based upon the name and the price, it works great, I use it at work which is on the Ambulance, it takes me to streets that are not on our maps that we carry, what a blessing to have.

so far it is ok i moved to pr and the map is reading ok but i still trying to figure it out but this is a 2006 model and the bonuses that came with it don't work

As I was planning a couple of 200+ miles of driving, I thought it would be useful to have a GPS device. I was a little hesitant in using it at first as it was like nothing I have ever used before. After a little experimenting, I was able to load a travel route on it with no trouble. Although this was a reconditioned device, I had no problems with it and it was as though brand new. It had been reconditioned at the factory so everything worked perfectly. The price was right for me as a brand new device was too expensive for me but this fit the bill!! I am extremely satisfied with this e-Bay purchase!

WELL I BOUGHT THIS TOMTOM BECAUSE MY WIFE HAD ONE JUST LIKE IT BEFORE, BUT IT WAS STOLEN. SO I BOUGHT THIS ONE. IN HINDSIGHT, I WOULD PROBABLY BUY A NEW ONE, NOT REFURB. THE NEW PRICES ARE JUST A LITTLE HIGHER THAN WHAT I PAID. BUT IT WORKS AND SHE IS HAPPY SO ALL IS WELL.

I like the TomTom I bought for my wife. It works well but the maps are a little out dated. I have not tried connecting it to the computer to download more maps. Overall I am happy with this unit.

After experiencing other GPS units, I prefer Tomtom above them all. Some noticeable high points would include 2.0 mile advance, understandable, and repeat instructions, easy to understand display, and with regular updates, the One establishes satellite connection quickly. It has an incredible amount of memory to input tons of addresses and in many cases bring your right to the driveway of your destination. The One is Bluetooth compatible with many popular mobile phones allowing you to take advantage of Tomtom's advanced features such as traffic congestion, weather, hands-free calling, and more. One feature I take advantage of often is the Cheap Fuel subscription. It will locate fuel stations with the lowest registered prices along your route, in the area, or near your destination. The One will even sound an alert when you're exceeding the speed limit! Incredible!

Some drawbacks I've found would include, quite a number of destination pointers may be several hundred yards off which may cause you to pass your destination by several homes or offices if you're unsure of what you may be looking for. Downloading a new map through the Tomtom Home software will delete your Favorites but worse, you can't restore Favorites only from backup - it's all or none. Lastly, some of Tomtom's best features are only available in European states. One such feature I would really like in the U.S. is traffic camera alerts.

Nonetheless, if you're in the market for a GPS system or you're frustrated with a GPS system that gives late or unclear instructions, or gets confused and can't calibrate enough to figure out where it is, or drops you off in the middle of a corn field, Tomtom is the way to go even if none of the additional perks existed.

The TomTom GPS receiver is a great product. The system is so user friendly and works right out of the box! I can't wait to go road tripping to put it to work and check out it's full potential! Very pleased with this purchase!
