THE TOM TOM ONE 130S IS A GREAT ITEM FOR THE PRICE. IT PACKS A LOT OF INFORMATION. THIS IS A GOOD ITEM TO BUY IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIME BUYER OF A GPS BECAUSE OF ITS EASE OF USE. THE COMPACT SIZE IS GREAT. THE GREAT THING IT LOADS UP QUICKLY AND COMES WITH ALL THE NECESSARY ACCESSORIES RIGHT IN THE BOX. YOU CAN GO RIGHT ON TOM TOM'S WEBSITE AND DOWNLOAD MANY EXTRAS FOR FREE! (POINTS OF INTERESTS, SOME NEW VOICES, AND MAP COLORS.) I BOUGHT THIS ITEM FOR MY HUSBAND FIRST AND THEN MY MOM. (I OWN THE PREVIOUS MODEL OF TOM TOM ONE 3RD EDITION). THEY BOTH LOVE THE 130S. A NICE GIFT FOR ANYONE. ALSO YOU CAN BUY MAPS NOT ONLY OF THE US AND CANADA, BUT OF EUROPE AND OTHERS AS WELL. AN EXCELLENT TRAVEL COMPANION.

  TOMTOM 130S GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM
Review created: 10/09/08
by:
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Recently purchased the TomTom 130s. This model is one level higher than the 130 version that is part of the ONE series. We recently decided to purchase a GPS system based on a recent trip to Oahu, Hawaii. It was there where we found ourselves lost around town on the first day. When I realized we had a navigation option via our cell phone company, we used it for the remainder of the trip and it became a lifesaver! The per day cost to use our GPS option via our cell phone started to add up. That's when we thought purchasing one for everday use while on the trip would be the better economical solution! Because of this, now any road trip across the country, no matter what city, we can get around without stopping and asking for directions because we have our TomTom. Purchasing one for a flat fee is a better choice versus paying a monthly charge added to your cell bill. That cost will add up exponentially per year. Getting a TomTom or any GPS system now will be 20 times cheaper and it will pay for itself!! Currently we are using our TomTom for everyday driving use and the features on it are great. Not only will you never get lost by using this GPS system, you'll discover "POI's" points of interest you've never known were around your own city. That's what we've currently been discovering! The ease of working the GPS is as easy as using a laptop, a cell phone, or any electronic device you thought you might never thought you could operate. The other day, we had to attend a function in our city at a venue we've never been to before. By putting the address in the GPS, our Tom Tom calculated driving time, gave step by step driving directions to the venue and got from point A to point B in no time at all. Our decision to choose the TomTom 130s was also based on the text to speech feature where a computer voice speaks step by step directions when you are driving. Some lower end model TomTom's and other GPS brands don't do that. Highly recommend a GPS that speaks. The other great feature of our 130s are the different screen views, navigation options, ability to interact with other TomTom users via the upload/download TomTom home computer program you can install on your computer, and the quick touch screen use while using your TomTom on the road. If you've ever thought you'd never need a GPS system even in your home town, I almost guarantee that one day you'll be thanking yourself for getting one!

  Good product....BUT....basic interface
Review created: 08/17/09

Afetr reviewing alot of GPS systems...I felt that this one had exactly what i needed as a first-timer. It is exactly as reviewed on other sites...a very good unit for someone who wants something simple. It is very easy to use. I was eaily able to plug it into My Computer and set up the Tom Tom program, update the maps with the free update and change preferences...right on the computer. HOWEVER...some drawbacks include: (1) not showing all of the upcoming facilities (gas, food, etc.). Also when it does show it, you can't touch it on the screen to expand any info. (2) it only reads the street names if you choose a computer voice...and even then, it's very choppy. this was disappointing but not a deal-breaker. (3) the "route planner" seemed to be very spotty and didn't always work. Maybe it will in when a new version is released? (4) it didn't have the destination that I was going to use it for for the first time. One good thing is...there are ALOT of user-created updates to the mapping and they are easy to install. For instance, I added ALL baseball parks in the U.S. I thought that was kind of cool. There are endless lists that people create and are easily downloadable...for free.
Overall...i like the unit....but, i feel like i will be upgrading if I start to use it more often.

  Just right for my needs
Review created: 01/12/10

Purchased the Tom Tom last week for use in traveling to my child's sports tournaments. We usually have to go to at least one each month we've never been to, and are then stuck in that area for an entire day or two. I tested the maps and navigation around town the day I took it out of the box. Being in a very small town that is experiencing a fair amount of growth, I figured it might not catch all of the small road changes - wrong! It performed great. As long as there's a street number, which everywhere should have thanks to the 911 systems, I'm golden! I had read that the Tom Tom was difficult to set up and work with, but I just looked through the manuel; the online is more detailed than quick start guide that comes with the navigator, hence "quick start". I had no problem setting up and using. I got the Tom Tom One 130 "S" for the text to speech feature. Definately the way to go; I need the names of the streets more than just "turn right" or "turn left" just to make sure. There's only one voice that will do the text to speech, so I haven't tried the others; but it's pleasant enough so it's a non-issue. Haven't found the bad yet, but I'm pretty picky, so I'm sure there's something.

  A Pretty Good Device

I have a TomTom One, 3rd Edition and like it a lot. I bought the TomTom One 130s believing it to be a significant upgrade from the 3rd edition--and it is, sort of. On the negative side, the 130 is slower to pick up the satellite signals, and is slower in calculating routes, and recalculate them. The mount is different from the 3rd edition which makes interchagability from my truck to our car a bit tricky. On the positive side, it switches from daylight illumination to night time illumination automatically, has a better compass, and shows when you are exceeding the speedlimit on certain roads. I also paid less for the 130s than for the 3rd Edition a year ago.

For a low cost GPS, either the 130s or the 3rd edition will do a good job. Would I buy another TomTom? Yes. But I'd probably splurge and buy the model that has the text to voice capability.

I love this TomTom One 130-S because this one actually says the street names and what street to turn on. instead of "turn right in 500 yards" or what ever.
This is good for me because I can't always look at the GPS to make sure that I'm following it correctly because of he childern in the car.Its easier to here someone say "turn on right on Main street" and then this way you can look for the street name instead of just "turn right in 500 yards"(with out hearing the street name).
I think its a safer product.
I love it.

  My daughter LOVES her TomTom

After much research I bought the TomTom 130S for my daughter. We live in northern Virginia, near the Washington DC area. The roads are often confusing and the traffic is so fast that you must be sure of where you are going. My daughter takes it with her whenever she goes out with friends so she feels confident that she can find her way around in new neighborhoods. She has even learned a few shortcuts in our area. The maps are very up to date and the directions are very clear and give you adequate time before you need to make a maneuver. An example is "exit in 2 miles" so you know to get over to the right and you have plenty of time to make your move even in heavy traffic. Another great feature is the size. It fits easily in her purse so she does not have to leave it in the car. It is easy to enter an address and the TomTom anticipates the street you are looking for after you put in just a few letters. She has not tried this on a road trip yet, but I know it will be a great "co-pilot" for her when she does. Overall, I think this was a great purchase and provides her with the features she really needs.

Paid a little too much for what I got

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought the TomTom ONE 130S at the suggestion of a friend. It has a number of useful features, like graphic mapping functions, portability and an easy to read screen. But, apparently the model my friend bought had a feature mine didn't- a text to speech function that gives the actual street names. The one I bought cost the same as his, but didn't provide street names when announcing upcoming turns. While the GPS is handy and works well in general, this missing function is annoying and makes the cost seem less reasonable.

  TomTom One a great help!
Review created: 11/03/09

I recently used this unit in The Ft Lauderdale and Miami area. It proved invaluable always getting me right to or very close to my intended destination. Even if i happened to miss a turn, this unit recalculated very quickly and put me back on track. If you dont want to lose a lot of time looking for places I would definately recommend this unit. The point of interest feature was very helpful in finding restaurants and name brand stores on the fly. The info displayed on the screen is very comprehensive, and is easily translated after you get comfortable with the unit. I have visited many areas in florida, and have always had trouble in new areas with navigation. This unit really made travel somewhat of a no brainer, and a believer of the GPS system out of me.

  TomTom ONE 130S GPS

I like this GPS. It works fine and its easy to use. The spoken street names in the directions is a big help.

The only problem I have is that with refurbished GPS units Tom Tom does not offer their new map guarantee like the do if you buy a new unit. With the cost of the map upgrade I really didn't save anything over buying the GPS in a store.

  Everything I was looking for..
Review created: 05/16/09

I travel often, and have never had a GPS before this one. I purchased this item just so I don't have to dink around with map quest any longer. It is refurbished with a 6 month warranty, and I got it for under $100. I've had limited use with the item but so far so good on the few trips I have used it on.

Upon receiving it, I charged it for 2 hours as specified in the documentation. When I powered it on the unit had full signal where I live (in the boonies) in less than 30 seconds. I plotted the address I was traveling too and bang it calculated my route in seconds. It gave the best route that I would normally take initially, but I decided to take another route because I had to make a stop. Immediately after I varied from the directions the unit provided it recalculated quickly, giving me the best route in the direction I was heading. There is a feature to manually adjust to an alternate route, which I know now is very simple to use, but I did not have the time to try and use it at the time.

My main concern with the unit when I ordered it was the speaker volume, many reviews of the 130-S said that the speaker volume was barely audible. Not so in my case, I run the volume at 60% and it is clearly audible for city driving. I had the windows down going 75mph, and radio on at one point, with the speaker volume set at 90%, when the lady spoke it was so loud I jumped. No problems there.

So far so good, and I'm very pleased with the unit as a whole.

  TomTom GPS
Review created: 11/03/09

The TomTom GPS units are (in my opinion) the BEST of the top 3, the other 2 being Gar... and Mag... You have complete control of what you want displayed on the face; eg time to next, time to destination, miles to next, miles to final, compass, color schemes, ground speed - with overspeed warnings, red light camera warnings, etc etc. Complete versatility! And great security. Security control has to be done on your own computer. Complete control is managed through TomTom's 'Home' program that you download (free) to your computer. Wow! I have the basic, ONE 130S, and it does all of this, so I can only imagine what the more expensive units will do. Of course, all this comes with a small price to pay: there are 7 menus that you have to navigate to set up your unit. But I don't complain. The one complaint I have is that this model does not come with a home wall charger; you recharge either from your vehicle or your USB port (cables included). Well done, TomTom!

Above GPS retails around $140.00. I paid $80.00 on ebay. Retail purchases come with the latest, updated, maps. Ebay does not, although the system works with the installed, outdated, maps it costs around $80.00 to purchase these update maps through Tomtom. Go figure!

This is my first automotive GPS so I have no experience to compare this product to. It has a very reasonable price due to being factory reconditioned.

The touch screen function works well, and the menues are very logical and intuitive.

The screen is large enough to see well and the maps displayed are accurate and complete.

It picks up satelites very quickly, and has a wide range of voices and languages to choose from.

I am quite satisfied and have bought several for gifts.

Bought this one after having a different brand GPS. Like the ease of use and the directions given are so easy to follow. I work with a German Shepherd Rescue and travel alot to homes and destinations to pick up dogs. This GPS makes it so easy to get to places and areas I have not been too. While driving the directions given are accurate and no last minute turn here instructions like some GPS models. Taken right out of the box and it is ready to use. Will reroute you easily if you make a wrong turn, and get you back on track.

The main reason I bought the 130S is the very loud voice. I use it in my convertible, and motorcycle. You can display all the info on one screen, unlike Garmin, current spd, posted spd, arrivle time, compuse, for 150 to 200 bucks, you can't beat it
