TomTom GO Plus Car GPS Receiver

This model was probably good a few years back. Today (November 2009) most all models offer far more features and say street names out loud; this one does not.

The complaints that follow must be qualified with the acknowledgment that I did not get a manual because I bought it refurbished and via ebay and this is my first GPS unit. Many annoyances have been resolved as I have had time to discover how to adjust settings.

With that said, I won't get another Tom Tom because it came with default settings based on British measurements and British references such as " motorway" instead of "highway".

It has also rejected many of my requested destinations because it doesn't recognize them and offers a limited range of Points of Interest. It won't accept a street as a destination without a house number. It's accuracy and effectiveness are inconsistent in parking lots.

If I choose to continue past my programmed destination or want to drive without directions, there is no way to tell it to allow that. It continues to bug me to go back to the last destination requested. I need to turn it off in such cases but would like to keep it on for the other information on the screen like driving speed and driving direction. The voice can be turned off but not while driving.

It is so basic, some might suggest it is "good enough for beginners". I would disagree because it has been so hard to use. I would have thrown it out if not adept at using technology in general.

On the positive side, the voice can be very loud once you figure out how to set it. It has several voices to choose from though that is probably standard. It has given me a good idea of what to look for in my next GPS purchase and the reduced price minimizes the ouch of a bad choice.

I would rate them good because my order came missig a peice. I rated them excellent because all I did was email them and they gave no grieve sent the missing item out that day. My order was shipped out right away- I recieved it right on time and it was sealed nicely and descrete so that my significant other did not know what it was since it is a present! :) The item is in fantastic shape- never been used, as stated and packaged perfectly! Size and capability. Smart machine! This machine refigures route quickly when I change from recommended route. Links to satellite much quicker than my first GPS.

This GPS is outdated no longer made by tom tom and no parts are made for it. The only way to update the maps are to purchase new ones at a price more than the unit cost originally. Street address' cant be found that have been around for 10 years or longer. I thought Tom Tom was a good product but this model is junk. I would not buy this one again or recommend it to anyone else. The only good thing about it was the price, but you get what you pay for. I recently purchased a Navigon unit for a little less and it came with free map upgrade, it speaks street names and is all around a much better unit.
