Synopsis
Criticism and controversy have surrounded the blockbuster actor's connection to the cultish Church of Scientology for years, but Tom Cruise receives one of his most thorough drubbings at the hands of Andrew Morton, a professional celebrity writer who has previously written biographies of Posh Spice and David Beckham, Madonna, and Princess Di. TOM CRUISE: AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY certainly discusses Cruise's charm and star power, but its main focus is how Cruise has latched on to the quirky and creepy Church of Scientology as a way to bolster his megalomaniacal ego. If Cruise comes across looking bad in the book, the Church of Scientology's current leader (and Cruise's best friend) David Miscavige appears as a golden-tongued devil--Miscavige has been accused of beating his followers and cruelly subjecting his Church rivals to a procedure known as "the walking cure" in which they must continually walk from the moment they wake until the moment they fall down from weariness.

For two years, award-winning biographer Andrew Morton has been seeking out everyone from former teachers and girlfriends to Scientology insiders to friends who have watched a once-bullied, "nothing special" outsider transform himself into an icon Forbes has called the most powerful celebrity in the world. Here, with never-seen photos and never-heard revelations, is a portrait of the real Tom Cruise--his work, his love life, his marriages, his religion.--From publisher description.

I loved the gossip. I'm sorry, I have a dreadful feeling that most of this is true and that's why Tom and the Scientologists are making such a fuss. You read about his life, and all those women..and all those stupid movies (like 4 for every good one) and it's just a really quick read. There is enough gossip in there to last a good bath and 2 glasses of wine. If 1/10th of what Andrew Morton says about Katie Holmes is true, it makes me so terribly sad. She used to be so cute but I saw her on Good Morning America and the whole librarian velvet voice thing really rankled. You get her back story and who Tom screened before he got her to sign on the dotted line. I can't imagine being either so naive or so money grubbing as to "fall in love with him when they shook hands"...makes me feel just bad for her. As for the child rearing a child..why is it when a celebrity (or celebrity spouse) has a child - suddenly they become like this font of maternal knowledge? But there's great stuff in here - you can consider it a sort of hard-cover copy of the Enquirer or something..remember the Enquirer had everything right about O.J. -- so you can't just disregard gossip out of hand..if 1/10th of what he says is true, it's still a really sad situation.

Like many, I grew up a fan of Tom Cruise, but when Tom went bonkers a few years ago on Oprah and even before that, divorcing Nicole Kidman and professing to "know the history of psychiatry," I liked him a whole lot less. I really tried to like this book a lot, but truthfully, if you follow the gossip about Tom and Katie then you have heard it all before. There was nothing really new. Yes,....we all know that there is a big mystery surrounding his divorce from Nicole Kidman, but it would have been nice to have Morton dig further and find out some facts on why this is so. Yes again....we all know about Tom and Katie's first date, but what about their first night together? If you want anything different or juicy, it just isn't here. We all know that Katie was suppose to be carrying the new Ron Hubbard. The Scientologist that predicted that just made the couple look foolish....or more foolish than usual. Morton seems to like guessing what Tom or Katie might feel, but his guess is as good as ours. The first part of this book was tough to get through. All about Tom, but no interesting details or eye openers, all old stuff. It got a little better in the middle and end. The only thing Morton did was delve into Tom's role in Scientology and a lot of speculation. Frankly, I wanted to hear new things. I doubt there were any secret collaborators working on this book with Morton. If you are a real die-hard Tom fan than read this book, but you probably know all this stuff anyway.
