Criticism and controversy have surrounded the blockbuster actor's connection to the cultish Church of Scientology for years, but Tom Cruise receives one of his most thorough drubbings at the hands of Andrew Morton, a professional celebrity writer who has previously written biographies of Posh Spice and David Beckham, Madonna, and Princess Di. TOM CRUISE: AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY certainly discusses Cruise's charm and star power, but its main focus is how Cruise has latched on to the quirky and creepy Church of Scientology as a way to bolster his megalomaniacal ego. If Cruise comes across looking bad in the book, the Church of Scientology's current leader (and Cruise's best friend) David Miscavige appears as a golden-tongued devil--Miscavige has been accused of beating his followers and cruelly subjecting his Church rivals to a procedure known as "the walking cure" in which they must continually walk from the moment they wake until the moment they fall down from weariness.

    NARRATED BY JOHN HINCH Abridged

    When Tom went bonkers a few years ago on Oprah and even before that,professing to "know the history of psychiatry," I began to think maybe he had "lost it." I tried to like this bio, but if you already follow the gossip about Tom and Katie then you have heard it all before. We know their was a mystery surrounding his divorce from Nicole Kidman, but Mr. Morton didn't dig further and find out some facts. If you want anything different it just isn't here. Katie was suppose to be carrying the new Ron Hubbard. When Suri writes her first Sci-Fi book I'll believe it! Morton seems to guess what Tom or Katie might feel, but we can do that also. The first part of this book was all about Tom, BUT no interesting details or eye openers, all old stuff. The middle was better. The only thing Morton did was delve into Tom's role in Scientology. I doubt there were any secret collaborators working on this book with Morton.
