The 983K puts the lie to the old sage that titleists are hard to hit and therefore only in the bags of very low handicappers. I purchased over two dozen drivers this winter on Ebay on my quest to find one I could hit well. The 983K is definitly high on that list. The list includes; Taylormades 360 and 360XD, 420 burner, 510, 540, 540XD and 580XD; Callaways from Bobby Jones, through most of the big berthas and GBB II 380 and 415; The Titleist 904T; Srixon 302 and 403, Cleveland 330, 400 and 460 Launchers, (my opinion? the 330 is still the longest stick made), and Cobras..the beautiful Cobras 350SS 380SS, 427SS, 400 SZ and 440 SZ, yep I think the 350SS is the best Cobra.
The 983K Titleist is very hard to beat for consistent straight and long. I have drivers that I can hit a little further...but consistent straight is awesome in a Titleist.
Perhaps the most important thing I learned buying drivers on EBay is that he isn't selling that driver cause it's the best stick he's got. You can bet if it's for sale on EBay somebody had trouble hitting it. Why is it that drivers of the same OEM make and model hit differently?
When you take one apart it becomes apparent why that is. The shafts are all different. The need for spine alignment is no myth and a good shaft is more than half the club. The good news? There are all kinds of clubmakers around who can fix that for you...hell you can do what I did and learn to do it for yourself. Few hundred invested in your shop and you can learn to get those shafts installed optimum quickly.
The 983Ks come with a variety of shafts. I like the prolite 35S by far the best of the shafts that came in my three 983ks. I have found that the best by far after market 983K is the fujikura speeder made FOR Titleist by Fujikura, not by Titleist or in partnership like other manufacturers do.
The prolite is a high kick, low weight, low torque shaft which means it's easier to get consistent good contact and the trajectory tends to be low and boring. On a 983K which is not one of those gigantic watermelon heads, (385) this combination works well for me. The speeders are heavier and offer mid to high trajectory. I will admit can hit the 983K speeder a good long way.
Overall the 983K is a great stick. I can generate respectable clubhead speed even with the heavier speeder on it. It's an incredible buy now on EBay and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants the power of titanium, likes the classic pear shape nongigantic head and let's face it..do you know anyone playing titleists that doesn't swagger a bit?
