Titanic Movie Sinks With Disappointment

If you're looking for just a good disaster drama of the Titanic, this movie is every bit as good as any fictionalized story, I suppose. But historically speaking, even with the ficticious love story and sinister ploys (Tim Curry makes a great villain), the accuracy of the known details of the Titanic should've been preserved - and they clearly were not. Andrews isn't even mentioned that I'm aware of in this story but was a huge part of the real story; reported accounts of survivors from Walter Lord's many years of research were either skipped altogether or worse - used by other characters in this movie that didn't say these things at all. And above all, the orchestra isn't in sync with the music and appears shabby - as though the musicians can't really play and are pretending. That's not so bad unless it looks bad. In this version, it looks REALLY bad.
George C. Scott is always good but the script gave him lines that were clearly just for theatrics and never really part of the real story. He looked like General Patton at war with an iceberg.
As an amateur Titanic historian, I like the real thing and don't really mind the ficticious stories that are woven into the drama. Cameron's version was far better in maintaining accuracy where the Titanic's reality was concerned. Andrews may have had a ficticious part when talking to Rose but at least they had him aboard the ship! And the orchestra could play (or appear to play).
I don't think there will ever be a better Titanic film than that which McQuitty produced in the 50s from Walter Lord's many years of research and hard work. It was very little fiction and mostly bare facts that made that great film in London so many years ago. This movie was disappointing to me and may be to you as well if you prefer a more accurate account.
If you want just the drama of it's stellar actors and actresses, go for it. It's not bad. But the orchestra - just don't look and you'll be okay.
