Album Notes Cassette and LP available as part of BEAT THE BOOTS box set. The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Ray Collins (vocals); Bunk Gardner, Jim Sherwood (saxophone); Ian Underwood (woodwinds, keyboards); Don Preston (keyboards); Roy Estrada (bass, background vocals); Jimmy Carl Black, Billy Mundi (drums, background vocals). Recorded live in Stockholm, Sweden on September 30, 1967. This legendary bootleg was officially released in 1991 as part of the "Beat the Boots" series, exact replicas of 15 different unauthorized Zappa CDs complete with their original lo-fi sound and shoddy packaging. While some entries in the series are genuinely awful, this CD stands with any of Zappa's many officially sanctioned live recordings due to its comparative rarity, as audio documents of the original Mothers of Invention are hard to come by. The sound is uncommmonly clear and the set, from a September, 1967 concert in Stockholm, Sweden, features some of Zappa's best material. Most of the set melds Zappa's two great musical loves, as it mixes '50s R&B classics like the Crows' "Gee" with Stravinsky's "Petroushka" and bits of Tchaikovsky. The even more impressive encore is an elongated medley of the early Mothers classics "King Kong" and "It Can't Happen Here," the latter sounding particularly disturbing and compelling. This CD is historically and musically important.
