Album Notes Moe: Al Schnier (vocals, acoustic, electric & lap steel guitars); Chuck Garvey (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Rob Derhak (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, Nepalese bells); Vinnie Amico (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jeffrey Petit (alto sax); Andrew Ballavia (tenor saxophone); J.C. Kuhl (saxophone); Dave Fitzhugh (flugelhorn); John Carroll (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Andrew Winn (Wurlitzer piano); Steve Young (Hammond B-3 organ); Lorenza Ponce (violin); Jane Scarpatoni (cello); John Alagia (tambourine). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, New York from February to April 1998. Moe is part of that HORDE axis of bands (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, etc.) that became popular with Deadheads looking for something else to do. Like their jamming brethren, Moe combines blues, folk-rock and a slight '60s tinge with a bouncy, almost-funky rhythm section, jazzy riffing and a kind of neo-hippie attitude, unassuming and good-natured. Their technically accomplished-but-inviting sound is at its most accessible on TIN CANS AND CAR TIRES, where polished songcraft and tight arrangements take precedence over the facile frippery of Moe's peers. Though the production is crystalline, there's no excess here; the band's basic two-guitar approach is essentially unadorned here, which is all for the best. It's the mix of raw rock energy and thoughtful musicianship that ultimately makes TIN CANS AND CAR TIRES a success.
