Miley Cyrus's THE TIME OF OUR LIVES is a Wal-Mart exclusive release intended to coincide with the mid-2009 launch of the singer's joint apparel line with designer Max Azria, also an exclusive for the retailer. And while the EP's release may have been driven by the kind of promotional blitz and branding synergy representative of the most lowbrow of commercial instincts, THE TIME OF OUR LIVES is not without its fair share of artistic growth on the part of the still-in-her-teens singer. From propulsive rockers ("Kicking and Screaming") to the sassy party anthems ("Party in the U.S.A.") to power-ballads ("Obsessed"), it's clear that Cyrus is trying to shed some of the airy inconsequence of her `tween idol image into a slightly edgier, more robust, set of pop rock.
