Excellent read! Heinlein's opus was his best.

I decided to buy this book while in a nostalgic mood. I enjoyed this story years ago while in my late teens, and it's stuck with my memories ever since. Years later, now that my mind and perspective have changed, I didn't expect this story to inspire my imagination as it had the first time. It did. In fact, the storytelling skill and the depth of the characters found in Heinlein's most prolific work delighted me more than ever.
As we move into the future, Heinlein's prophetic projections for humanity seem more visionary by the day. Being well ahead of his time in regards to his views on social dynamics and the eventual erosion of many taboos caused a lot of debate when it was originally written. I applaud the writer's courage and open mind, which gave him the ability to pen a story that is still waiting for society's "rules" to catch up. When this book was originally published, the mysteries of the human genome and DNA were just beginning to catch the interest of researchers, and certainly were not household terms yet. The author discusses the use of genetic knowledge and advanced computer technology at length, and with startling clarity. His skill for engaging the imagination while weaving a fantastic, yet believable story built around well-drawn characters is virtually unparalleled.
It seems that many works of fiction that run as long as this story (600+ pages) are the result of a writer being indulgently effusive. In this case, I found myself wishing it wouldn't end. I look forward to reading this book a third time. Hopefully I won't wait so long to do it again.
