Synopsis
After completing the FIONAVAR TAPESTRY trilogy, which showed the influence of a variety of Celtic and Norse myths, Guy Gavriel Kay began writing epic historical fantasies. Although magic is generally present to some extent and the books do take place on a variety of fantasy worlds, these later novels tend to be inspired by actual historical events. The first of these fantasies, TIGANA, is based on the politics and culture of the continually warring Renaissance Italian city-states. Of the nine provinces of the Palm, Tigana was the proudest of them all. That was before the two Sorcerer-Tyrants, Brandin of Ygrath and Alberico of Barbadior, conquered all nine. And when the Prince of Tigana killed Brandin's son in battle, Brandin exacted a terrible revenge: he cast a spell that caused the name of Tigana to be utterly forgotten and unable to be heard by any non-Tiganese. Nearly 20 years later, the Prince's son has gathered a small, secret band of followers, and initiated a delicate maneuvering of events intended to free the Palm from the invaders and to regain Tigana's name. Independently of this group, the Tiganese woman Dianora has embarked upon her own plot of vengeance against Brandin, but her scheming goes awry when she falls in love with him.

Industry Reviews
"Kay has spun a richly sensuous fantasy world, full of evocative history, religions, folklore, local customs, and magical rites....A bravura performance, nearly impossible to put down unfinished anywhere in the last 300 pages." (starred review)
Kirkus (08/15/1990)

"...Kay's brilliant and complex portrayal of good and evil, high and low, will draw readers to this consuming epic."
Publishers Weekly (01/01/1990)

One of the greatest books ever written.

It's funny. It's been at least ten years since I last read this book. I've read hundreds, if not thousands, between now and then, and this is the one I always go back to as the now-cliched "Greatest book I've ever read." But in this case, it's true.

This is a fantasy novel set in a different world with two moons, but is modeled after Italy. It's a story about taking back something that has been taken from you, and the blurring the line between honor and revenge, hate and justice.

It's pretty rare a fantasy novel can elicit such a powerful emotional reaction. This is one that did.
