I love this author and bought this book solely because I loved another book he wrote-"Devil in the White City". If you haven't read Devil it the white City, you should. Hopefully this book will be just as good. Very detailed and interesting history in this author's books!

  Walking Through History
Review created: 10/20/07(updated 10/20/07)

As expected , this story primarily entails the environment surrounding 1 of
history's respected inventors , Marconi. Without prejudice the story drifts
through the events surrounding the early pioneering of wireless communication.

With detailed precision Erik Larson has , once again , captured the events ,
life , and times , of the many ambitious inventors who sought to claim rights
to the advent and need for wireless communication. Even though sceptics had
proposed that there was neither a future nor possibility of the invention
having any substance in reality.

Just like the ships at sea , who are desperate at times for any sign of shore
or even a hint thereof in a cold gail , Marconi emerges to create the single
spark which ignites a community of characters eager to profit from the spoils
of Science . Allbeit late 18th Century Science , the book reveals the social
intracacies involved , moving everforward through the fog carrying Maconi's
dream of being able to prove that Wireless Communication was both possible and
practical for the times surrounding the turn of the 19th Century.

As in his previous non-fiction title "The Devil In The White City" , Larson
moulds this story through the eye of an observer , anticipating the time when
all could be known by all. Until , murder was an event collected in a huge
net of suspicion surrounding Wireless , and Marconi's sacrifice begins it's stall.

  Thunderstruck but not earthshaking

Larson's other works have prepared us for much better dual storytelling than this between Marconi and Dr. Crippen. Only at the end of this very long account do we find the connection between the two. But Larsen is always instructive and I believe factually accurate.

I bought the book because I had read an excerpt in the newspaper and was intrigued by the story. It is an exceptional story and the book is brand new! Nothing to dislike about that!
