More than an adaptation
"Throne of Blood" is an adaptation of macbeth set in feudal Japan, filmed in black & white in the late 50s. The director remains completely faithful to Shakespeare's story, but changes the setting and creates a unique take on a classic play. Every shot in the film is beautifully composed, and the acting, though very slow and old fashioned, is dramatic and captivating. The character of Lady Macbeth is very different from the way I have seen her played, and it adds something to this version. The pace may be a bit slow for some viewers, but if you like classic films and don't mind reading subtitles, this is a fine piece of art.
