Movie Description A young couple decides to move in to the mansion of their old uncle, ex-college professor Dr. Markesan (Boris Karloff) to save money. The trouble is, who no one has heard from him in years, the place is dusty and deserted, and the uncle looks like he's dead. He still talks and walks around though, and he lets the couple stay as long as they promise not to leave their room at night. Of course they disobey; the strange noises coming from the basement are just too bizarre to ignore. What they find will, of course, prove too chilling to reveal.
This episode of the beloved 1960s TV series is hosted by horror legend Boris Karloff, who also stars, and it's great to see him in both capacities. Director Robert Florey (THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS) uses lots of stark lighting and dark shadows to lend atmosphere to the creepy events. The film is based on a short story by August Derleth and Mark Schorer. Classic TV fans should welcome the sight of BEWITCHED's Dick York in the lead, and should enjoy everything from the jangly Morton Stevens score to the Saul Bass-style credit design.
